Adobe invented PDF, and Acrobat Pro remains the most complete PDF software there is. The free online tools are a different product: a sample of Acrobat, limited by design so that regular users subscribe.
The short answer
Choose Acrobat online if
- You need what only Acrobat does well: preflight, PDF/A validation, accessibility checks and tagging, redaction at scale.
- Your company already has Acrobat licences.
- You need signature workflows with legal audit trails at enterprise level.
Choose PDFJade if
- You need more than one task today without an account.
- You want to protect a PDF with a password you can remove later yourself. Adobe's FAQ notes that a password added with the free tool can't be removed without a subscription.
- You'd rather the file never goes to anyone's cloud.
Side by side
| Adobe Acrobat online | PDFJade | |
|---|---|---|
| Where files are processed | Uploaded to Adobe cloud storage | In your browser. The file is never uploaded. |
| How long files are kept | Without signing in, deleted from Adobe's servers shortly after (no period stated). Signed in: saved to your account. | Nothing is kept on a server, because nothing is sent to one. |
| Free limits | Without an account, one free transaction on most tools. With a free account, premium tools allow one free transaction every 30 days. | No caps on files, pages or tasks. Your device's memory is the practical limit. |
| Account | Adobe account for most repeated use | None |
| Paid plan | Acrobat subscriptions, with a 7-day trial of Acrobat Pro | Free |
| Ads | No ads, but prompts to subscribe | None |
| Office conversions | Yes | Not offered (no PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, no Word to PDF) |

How the free tier works
According to Adobe's FAQ, without signing in "most tools let you complete one free transaction". Signed in with a free account, you can fill, sign, share and comment for free, and premium tools allow "one free transaction every 30 days on a rolling basis".
One detail is easy to miss: Adobe notes that a password added with the free Protect PDF tool can't be removed later without an Acrobat subscription. Our Protect PDF uses the same AES-256 standard, and Unlock PDF removes it again with the password, free.
Where your files go
Adobe states that its online services "upload your files to Adobe cloud storage". If you don't sign in, the file is deleted from its servers soon after; if you do, it's saved to your account and marked private. For company documents that may be exactly what you want. For a one-off personal file, local processing avoids the question.
What PDFJade doesn't do
A fair comparison includes our own gaps. These are deliberate, and they won't all change:
- Converting PDF to editable Word, Excel or PowerPoint, or Office files to PDF. Doing that well needs heavy server software.
- Editing the existing text of a PDF. You can add text, images and shapes on top in the Studio, not rewrite a paragraph in place.
- Signature requests with an audit trail. You can sign a PDF yourself, but not send it to others to sign and track it.
- Cloud storage, history or team accounts. Nothing is kept, so there is nothing to come back to.
- Very large jobs on weak devices. A 500-page scan on an old phone will be slow, because your phone does the work.
Questions
Are Adobe's online PDF tools free?
Partly. Without signing in, most tools give one free transaction. With a free account, filling, signing and commenting are free and premium tools allow one transaction every 30 days.
Is PDFJade a replacement for Acrobat Pro?
No. For professional prepress, accessibility tagging or editing text, Acrobat is in another league. PDFJade covers everyday page jobs, privately and for free.
