Smallpdf has grown from a compression site into a full document platform: account, cloud storage, mobile apps, e-signatures and AI tools. It's well designed and, for people who live in PDFs all day, the subscription can be worth it.
If you only need to merge, split, compress or sign a file now and then, the platform can feel like a lot. The free plan has a daily download limit on many tools, and the pricing page steers you toward a 7-day trial of Pro.
The short answer
Choose Smallpdf if
- You want Office conversions, AI summaries or a document history in one account.
- You need e-signature requests.
- Your team already pays for it.
Choose PDFJade if
- You keep hitting the daily download limit on the free plan.
- You don't want to start a trial or create an account for a one-off merge.
- The document is sensitive and you'd rather it never touch a server.
- You need something unusual: Bates numbering, odd and even pages, splitting scanned spreads in half.

What Smallpdf says about your files
According to its own article on safety, files processed by the free tools are "permanently removed from our servers after one hour of processing", transfers use TLS encryption, and its servers are in Ireland, under EU data law. It also holds ISO 27001 certification. That's a serious setup.
The difference with PDFJade is that there's no server to secure: the file is opened, changed and saved by your own browser. It's a simpler promise, and easy to check: load a tool page, switch off your Wi-Fi, and run it. It still works.
When the platform is worth paying for
If you convert PDFs to Word every week, collect signatures from clients, or want every document you've processed in one searchable place, Smallpdf does things we simply don't. Use the right tool for the job; we'd rather you come back for the jobs we do well.
What PDFJade doesn't do
A fair comparison includes our own gaps. These are deliberate, and they won't all change:
- Converting PDF to editable Word, Excel or PowerPoint, or Office files to PDF. Doing that well needs heavy server software.
- Editing the existing text of a PDF. You can add text, images and shapes on top in the Studio, not rewrite a paragraph in place.
- Signature requests with an audit trail. You can sign a PDF yourself, but not send it to others to sign and track it.
- Cloud storage, history or team accounts. Nothing is kept, so there is nothing to come back to.
- Very large jobs on weak devices. A 500-page scan on an old phone will be slow, because your phone does the work.
