# PDFJade > Merge, split, convert, sign and edit PDFs for free. No sign-up, and your files never leave your browser. PDFJade is a set of PDF tools that run entirely in your browser. You open a page, choose a file, and the result is built on your own device. - **Where files are processed**: In your browser. The file is never uploaded. - **How long files are kept**: Nothing is kept on a server, because nothing is sent to one. - **Free limits**: No caps on files, pages or tasks. Your device's memory is the practical limit. - **Account**: None - **Price**: Free - **Ads**: None - **Offline option**: No app. Works in any current browser, on desktop and phone Home: https://pdfjade.com/ ## What PDFJade doesn't do - Converting PDF to editable Word, Excel or PowerPoint, or Office files to PDF. Doing that well needs heavy server software. - Editing the existing text of a PDF. You can add text, images and shapes on top in the Studio, not rewrite a paragraph in place. - Signature requests with an audit trail. You can sign a PDF yourself, but not send it to others to sign and track it. - Cloud storage, history or team accounts. Nothing is kept, so there is nothing to come back to. - Very large jobs on weak devices. A 500-page scan on an old phone will be slow, because your phone does the work. # Merge PDF files Put several PDFs into one file, in the order you choose. Drag to reorder, then download a single document. Open: https://pdfjade.com/merge-pdf ## How to merge PDF files 1. Add two or more PDF files. You can add more later. 2. Use the arrows to put them in the order you want. 3. Press Merge PDFs and download the combined file. ## At a glance | | | | --- | --- | | Where files are processed | In your browser. It is never sent to a server, so confidential files are as safe as they are on your own computer. ## Good to know Page sizes and orientations are kept as they are, so a portrait invoice and a landscape chart can sit in the same file without being resized. If a file is password-protected, remove the password first. ## Questions ### Is there a limit on the number of files? No fixed limit. Everything is processed on your device, so the real limit is your memory. Dozens of normal documents are fine; hundreds of large scans may slow a phone. ### Will the merged file keep bookmarks and links? Page content, text and images are kept. Bookmarks and internal links from the original files are not carried over. ## Related tools - [Split PDF](https://pdfjade.com/split-pdf) - [Extract pages](https://pdfjade.com/extract-pdf-pages) - [Delete pages](https://pdfjade.com/delete-pdf-pages) - [PDF to JPG](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-to-jpg) - [Scan to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/scan-to-pdf) Source: https://pdfjade.com/merge-pdf --- # Split a PDF into several files Cut a PDF into separate files by page ranges, every N pages, or one file per page. "1-3, 4-6" gives two files; "2, 5" gives two single-page files. A trailing dash means up to the last page. ## Questions ### Can I split by bookmarks or chapters? Not yet. You can read the chapter start pages in your PDF viewer and enter them as ranges. ### Is my file uploaded? No. The file is read and cut inside your browser and never sent to a server. ## Related tools - [Extract pages](https://pdfjade.com/extract-pdf-pages) - [Delete pages](https://pdfjade.com/delete-pdf-pages) - [Organize pages](https://pdfjade.com/organize-pdf) - [JPG to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/jpg-to-pdf) - [Page numbers](https://pdfjade.com/add-page-numbers) Source: https://pdfjade.com/split-pdf --- # Extract pages from a PDF Keep only the pages you need and leave the rest behind. It is never sent to a server, so confidential files are as safe as they are on your own computer. ## Good to know Pages come out in the order you type them, so "5, 1" puts page 5 before page 1. Handy for rearranging while you extract. ## Questions ### Does extracting change the original file? No. Your original stays untouched and you get a separate new PDF. ### Why is the new file about as big as the old one? Images and fonts shared across pages may be kept in the file. If size matters, compress it afterwards. ## Related tools - [Delete pages](https://pdfjade.com/delete-pdf-pages) - [Organize pages](https://pdfjade.com/organize-pdf) - [Rotate PDF](https://pdfjade.com/rotate-pdf) - [Markdown to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/markdown-to-pdf) - [Stamp](https://pdfjade.com/stamp-pdf) Source: https://pdfjade.com/extract-pdf-pages --- # Delete pages from a PDF Remove blank, duplicate or unwanted pages. It is never sent to a server, so confidential files are as safe as they are on your own computer. ## Good to know Check the page count shown next to your file before typing a range. Deleting every page is not possible and will be flagged. ## Questions ### Can I undo a deletion? Your original file is never changed, so just run the tool again with different pages. ### Is the removed content really gone from the new file? The deleted pages are not included in the new PDF. For sensitive material, still open the result and check it. ## Related tools - [Organize pages](https://pdfjade.com/organize-pdf) - [Rotate PDF](https://pdfjade.com/rotate-pdf) - [Reverse pages](https://pdfjade.com/reverse-pdf) - [Add image](https://pdfjade.com/add-image-to-pdf) - [Fill form](https://pdfjade.com/fill-pdf-form) Source: https://pdfjade.com/delete-pdf-pages --- # Organize PDF pages visually See every page as a thumbnail, drag to reorder, rotate or remove pages, then save the new arrangement. Thumbnails are drawn on your device, so very long documents (several hundred pages) can be slow. Split them first if needed. ### Are my changes saved automatically? No. Nothing is written until you press Save PDF, and your original file stays as it was. ## Related tools - [Rotate PDF](https://pdfjade.com/rotate-pdf) - [Reverse pages](https://pdfjade.com/reverse-pdf) - [Crop PDF](https://pdfjade.com/crop-pdf) - [Watermark](https://pdfjade.com/watermark-pdf) - [Remove metadata](https://pdfjade.com/remove-pdf-metadata) Source: https://pdfjade.com/organize-pdf --- # Rotate PDF pages Turn sideways or upside-down pages the right way up. No. The page is flagged as rotated; the content is not re-drawn or re-compressed. ### Can I rotate just one page? Yes. Type its number in the Pages box, for example 4. ## Related tools - [Reverse pages](https://pdfjade.com/reverse-pdf) - [Crop PDF](https://pdfjade.com/crop-pdf) - [Change page size](https://pdfjade.com/resize-pdf-pages) - [Add QR code](https://pdfjade.com/add-qr-code-to-pdf) - [PDF to long image](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-to-long-image) Source: https://pdfjade.com/rotate-pdf --- # Reverse the page order of a PDF Flip a document so the last page comes first. It is never sent to a server, so confidential files are as safe as they are on your own computer. ## Good to know Cropping changes the visible area. The cropped content may still exist in the file, so don't use this to hide confidential information. ## Questions ### Does it remove the content I crop away? It hides it from view. The data can still be in the file. For real redaction you need a tool that rasterizes the page. ### Can I crop each page differently? Use the Pages box to crop some pages with one setting, then run the tool again for the others. ## Related tools - [Change page size](https://pdfjade.com/resize-pdf-pages) - [Insert blank pages](https://pdfjade.com/insert-blank-pages) - [Interleave PDFs](https://pdfjade.com/interleave-pdf) - [PDF to WebP](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-to-webp) - [Bates numbering](https://pdfjade.com/bates-numbering) Source: https://pdfjade.com/crop-pdf --- # Change PDF page size Fit every page onto A4, Letter or another standard size, scaled to fit with the right margins. No. Pages are scaled as vectors, so text and line art stay sharp. Embedded images keep their own resolution. ### Why are there white bands? With "Fit whole page", a page with a different proportion gets margins instead of being stretched. ## Related tools - [Insert blank pages](https://pdfjade.com/insert-blank-pages) - [Interleave PDFs](https://pdfjade.com/interleave-pdf) - [Pages per sheet](https://pdfjade.com/n-up-pdf) - [HEIC to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/heic-to-pdf) - [Protect PDF](https://pdfjade.com/protect-pdf) Source: https://pdfjade.com/resize-pdf-pages --- # Insert blank pages into a PDF Add empty pages after the pages you choose, or at the end. Use "0" in the list, for example 0, 5. ### Does it work for chapter openers? Yes. Enter the page numbers before each chapter if you want a blank back-side. ## Related tools - [Interleave PDFs](https://pdfjade.com/interleave-pdf) - [Pages per sheet](https://pdfjade.com/n-up-pdf) - [Remove blank pages](https://pdfjade.com/remove-blank-pages) - [Background colour](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-background-color) - [PDF to JPG](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-to-jpg) Source: https://pdfjade.com/insert-blank-pages --- # Interleave two PDFs (double-sided scans) Combine front and back scans into one correctly ordered document: 1 front, 1 back, 2 front, 2 back, and so on. The extra pages are added at the end. ### Does it work with scans from a feeder? Yes. The tool pads with blank pages automatically. ### Is text still readable at 9 per sheet? Only if your original has large text. Four per sheet is the practical limit for normal documents. ## Related tools - [Remove blank pages](https://pdfjade.com/remove-blank-pages) - [Split pages in half](https://pdfjade.com/split-pdf-pages-in-half) - [Odd or even pages](https://pdfjade.com/odd-even-pages) - [OCR PDF](https://pdfjade.com/ocr-pdf) - [Markdown to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/markdown-to-pdf) Source: https://pdfjade.com/n-up-pdf --- # Convert PDF to JPG Turn each page of a PDF into a JPG image. Nothing is uploaded, which means no waiting for a server and no copy of your document left behind. ## Good to know 150 dpi is plenty for screens and email. Use 300 dpi if the images will be printed. Higher resolution also means a bigger file and more time. ## Questions ### Is the text still sharp? At 150 dpi and above, yes. Text becomes part of the picture, so it can no longer be selected. ### Why did it fail on a long file? Big pages at 300 dpi use a lot of memory. Try a lower resolution or convert a few pages at a time. ## Related tools - [PDF to PNG](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-to-png) - [PDF to text](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-to-text) - [PDF to WebP](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-to-webp) - [Black and white PDF](https://pdfjade.com/grayscale-pdf) - [Unlock PDF](https://pdfjade.com/unlock-pdf) Source: https://pdfjade.com/pdf-to-jpg --- # Convert PDF to PNG Turn each page of a PDF into a lossless PNG image. Your file and your password are never sent to a server. ## Good to know Most of a big PDF's weight is photos and scanned pages stored at a far higher resolution than a screen or printer needs. Recommended brings images down to about 150 dpi at the largest page size, which still prints cleanly. Text, vector drawings and fonts are not touched. ## Questions ### How much smaller will my file get? It depends on what is inside. Scans and photo-heavy reports often lose 50 to 90 percent. A PDF that is mostly text is usually small already and may barely change. ### Will the text still be selectable? Yes, with Light, Recommended and Strong. Only Maximum turns pages into images. ### Why did nothing change? The images are already compressed as much as this level allows, or the size comes from embedded fonts. Try Strong, or Maximum for scans. ### Is my document uploaded to compress it? No. The images are decoded and re-encoded by your own browser. ## Related tools - [Protect PDF](https://pdfjade.com/protect-pdf) - [Unlock PDF](https://pdfjade.com/unlock-pdf) - [OCR PDF](https://pdfjade.com/ocr-pdf) - [Merge PDF](https://pdfjade.com/merge-pdf) - [Crop PDF](https://pdfjade.com/crop-pdf) Source: https://pdfjade.com/compress-pdf --- # Protect a PDF with a password Add a password that anyone must type to open the PDF. Your file and your password are never sent to a server. ## Good to know The file is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest method in the PDF standard, supported by Acrobat, Preview, Chrome, Edge and every current reader. A long password matters more than a clever one: four unrelated words beat a short string of symbols. ## Questions ### What if I forget the password? Nobody can recover it, including us: we never see it. Keep your unprotected original, or store the password in a password manager. ### Do print and copy restrictions really stop people? They stop honest readers and most apps. They are a request written into the file rather than a lock, so a determined person with the right software can ignore them. The opening password, on the other hand, is real encryption. ### Is the password sent anywhere? No. The file is encrypted inside your browser and the password never leaves this page. ### Will it open on a phone? Yes. iOS, Android and their built-in viewers support AES-256 protected PDFs. ## Related tools - [Unlock PDF](https://pdfjade.com/unlock-pdf) - [OCR PDF](https://pdfjade.com/ocr-pdf) - [Compress PDF](https://pdfjade.com/compress-pdf) - [Delete pages](https://pdfjade.com/delete-pdf-pages) - [Interleave PDFs](https://pdfjade.com/interleave-pdf) Source: https://pdfjade.com/protect-pdf --- # Remove a password from a PDF Save a copy of a protected PDF that opens without a password, or lift print and copy restrictions. It uses the one you know to decrypt the file, then saves it without encryption, which is handy for a bank statement you open every month or for merging protected files with other tools. ## Questions ### I don't know the password. Can you open it? No. This tool needs the password. For your own file, check emails from the sender: banks and payroll services often use a date of birth or part of an account number. ### Which kinds of protection are supported? Standard password security: AES-256, AES-128 and the older RC4 from early Acrobat versions. Files protected with a certificate or a company rights-management server can't be opened with a password. ### Is it legal to remove a PDF password? Removing protection from your own files, or files you are entitled to use, is generally fine. Respect the wishes of whoever protected a document you received. ### Is the file uploaded? Straight, sharp scans at 300 dpi give the best results; a crooked phone photo will still work but with more mistakes. ## Questions ### Will the pages change? No. The scan stays as it is. The recognised words are placed underneath, invisible, at the right positions. ### Why is the first run slow? The recognition engine and the language data, a few megabytes, are downloaded the first time. Your browser then keeps them. ### Does it work for handwriting? Poorly. OCR is made for printed text. Neat block capitals sometimes work. ### Is my scan sent to a server? No. The recogniser is downloaded to your browser and the pages never leave your device. ## Related tools - [Compress PDF](https://pdfjade.com/compress-pdf) - [Protect PDF](https://pdfjade.com/protect-pdf) - [Unlock PDF](https://pdfjade.com/unlock-pdf) - [Insert blank pages](https://pdfjade.com/insert-blank-pages) - [PNG to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/png-to-pdf) Source: https://pdfjade.com/ocr-pdf --- # PDFJade Merge, split, convert, sign and edit PDFs for free. No. Every tool runs inside your browser, so the file never leaves your device. Only the page itself, a few scripts and fonts are loaded from the internet. ### Is it really free? Yes. No account, no watermark, no daily limit. There is no trial that ends after three files. ### Why can't I convert PDF to Word or Excel? Those conversions need heavy software that doesn't run well in a browser, and doing them properly means uploading your file to a server. We'd rather offer fewer tools that are genuinely private. ### Does it work on a phone? Yes. Merging, splitting, signing and converting images all work on current iPhone and Android browsers. Very large files can be slow because phones have less memory. ### Is there a file size limit? There's no fixed limit, but your device has to hold the file in memory. Files up to a few hundred megabytes usually work on a computer. ### Can I use it offline? Not yet. The page needs a connection to load its scripts, but once loaded, your documents are not sent anywhere. Source: https://pdfjade.com/ --- # How to merge PDFs without uploading them anywhere > Combine a contract, its annexes and a scanned signature page into one file, in the right order, without sending any of it to a server. Most "free PDF merger" sites work the same way: you upload your files, their server stitches them together, and you download the result. That's fine for a recipe. It's less fine for a signed lease, a medical report or anything with a passport scan in it, because a copy of those files now sits on a machine you know nothing about. Merging doesn't actually need a server. A PDF is a set of pages plus a table that says where each one lives, and a modern browser can rebuild that table on its own. That's what our [Merge PDF](https://pdfjade.com/merge-pdf) tool does: the files are read from your disk into the page you have open, combined in memory and handed back to you as a download. ## The quick version 1. Open [Merge PDF](https://pdfjade.com/merge-pdf) and drop in your files, or press *Choose PDFs*. You can add more later. 2. Use the up and down arrows next to each file to set the order. The file at the top becomes the first pages of the result. 3. Press *Merge PDFs*. The combined file is downloaded as `merged.pdf`. That's it. On a laptop, merging ten ordinary documents takes a second or two. ## Getting the order right the first time The most common mistake isn't technical, it's sorting. Files called `scan 1.pdf`, `scan 10.pdf` and `scan 2.pdf` come out of most folders in that exact (wrong) order. Two habits help: - Rename files with leading zeros before you start: `01-contract`, `02-annex`, `03-signatures`. - Add the files one by one in reading order when there are only a handful. It's faster than fixing the order afterwards. If one of the files has pages in the wrong order inside it, merge first, then open the result in [Organize pages](https://pdfjade.com/organize-pdf) and drag the thumbnails around. Seeing the actual pages is far easier than reasoning about page numbers. ## What gets kept, and what doesn't Text stays selectable, images keep their quality and each page keeps its own size, so a landscape spreadsheet can sit next to portrait letters without being squashed. Two things are not carried over: bookmarks and internal links from the original files. If your annexes relied on a clickable table of contents, add one again in your editor or accept that readers will scroll. Password-protected files can't be merged until the password is removed, because their content is encrypted. If you know the password, [Unlock PDF](https://pdfjade.com/unlock-pdf) saves an unprotected copy you can merge, and [Protect PDF](https://pdfjade.com/protect-pdf) can lock the merged result again afterwards. ## Before you hit send Open the merged file and flick through it once. Check the first and last page of each original document, since that's where order mistakes show. For anything formal, it's worth adding [page numbers](https://pdfjade.com/add-page-numbers) so people can refer to "page 14" in an email without ambiguity. ## Questions ### Is there a limit to how many PDFs I can merge? There's no fixed limit. Your device's memory is the ceiling: dozens of normal documents are fine on a laptop, while hundreds of high-resolution scans may be slow on a phone. ### Can I merge PDFs on an iPhone or Android phone? Yes. The tool runs in mobile browsers. Pick the files from the Files app or your downloads, reorder them and download the result. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/merge-pdfs-without-uploading --- # How to sign a PDF on your phone in under a minute > Someone sent you a PDF to "sign and return". You don't have a printer, and you'd rather not install an app for one document. For most everyday paperwork, a rental form, a school permission slip, a freelance quote, "sign and return" means exactly that: put a signature that looks like yours on the last page and send the file back. You don't need a scanner for this, and you don't need to print anything. ## Step by step 1. Save the PDF to your phone. In most mail apps, tap the attachment, then the share button, then *Save to Files* (iPhone) or *Download* (Android). 2. Open [Sign PDF](https://pdfjade.com/sign-pdf) in your browser and choose the file. 3. Draw your signature in the box with your finger. Turn the phone sideways if the box feels cramped; you get a much smoother line. 4. Under *Page*, the default is the last page, which is right nine times out of ten. Choose *A specific page* if the signature line is elsewhere. 5. Pick a *Position* close to the signature line and adjust *Width*. Around 25 to 30 percent of the page width looks natural. 6. Press *Sign PDF*, download the file and attach it to your reply. ## If the signature has to sit on a precise line The nine preset positions are fine for most forms. When the line is somewhere awkward, say in the middle of a page next to a date field, use [PDF Studio](https://pdfjade.com/studio) instead: open the PDF, go to *Draw*, sign directly on the page, then drag and resize the signature until it sits exactly on the line. You can add the date with a text box in the same place. ## A better-looking signature - Sign slowly. Fast strokes on glass come out jagged. - Sign a sheet of white paper with a dark pen, take a photo in good light, and upload that image instead. It looks like ink because it is. - Keep the result small. A signature that fills half the page looks fake even when it's real. ## Is this legally valid? For a lot of ordinary agreements, an image of your signature on a document you clearly sent is accepted. Some documents, though, require a certified digital signature: certain contracts, public tenders, some HR and banking forms. We wrote a separate piece on [the difference between electronic and digital signatures](https://pdfjade.com/guides/electronic-vs-digital-signature); if the sender asks for a "qualified" or "certified" signature, this tool is not the right one. ## Questions ### Is my signature stored anywhere? No. It exists only in the page you have open and disappears when you close it. Nothing is uploaded. ### Can I sign several pages at once? Yes. Choose "Every page" under Page to place the same signature on each one, which is common for initialling contracts. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/sign-a-pdf-on-your-phone --- # Scanning paper with your phone: how to get clean, readable PDFs > Phone cameras are better than most office scanners now. The problem is almost never the camera. It's the light, the angle and the table. A scan has one job: someone else should be able to read it, print it and, ideally, search it. A wonky photo with a shadow across the middle fails all three. The good news is that almost every problem comes from four things you can fix in ten seconds. ## 1. Light from the side, never from behind you If the light source is behind you, your own head and phone cast a shadow right onto the page. Stand so that the window or lamp is to your left or right. Daylight from a window is ideal; overhead office lighting is acceptable; the phone's flash is the worst option because it creates a bright hot spot in the middle of glossy paper. ## 2. Hold the phone flat, not at an angle Photographing a page from an angle turns the rectangle into a trapezoid, and the text at the far edge comes out smaller and blurrier. Hold the phone parallel to the page, directly above it, and move closer until the page fills most of the screen. Tap on the text to focus before you shoot. ## 3. A dark, plain background White paper on a white desk has no visible edge. Put the page on something dark and matte: a wooden table, a book cover, a dark t-shirt. It makes the page stand out and avoids reflections. ## 4. Flatten the paper Folded letters and receipts curl. Put two coins on the corners, or press the page flat with a ruler just outside the frame. Curved lines of text are surprisingly tiring to read. ## Turning the photos into a PDF Open [Scan to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/scan-to-pdf) on your phone and press *Start camera*. Take one photo per page with *Take photo*; the pages are added in order. For printed text, tick *Make pages high-contrast black and white*: the grey paper becomes white and the text becomes properly black, which reads better and prints better. Leave it off for photos, colour charts and anything with handwriting in pencil. Choose *A4* or *US Letter* as the page size if the PDF will be printed, so it fits a normal sheet. Then press *Create PDF*. Already took the photos with your camera app? Use [JPG to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/jpg-to-pdf) instead, or [HEIC to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/heic-to-pdf) if your iPhone saved them as HEIC. ## After scanning If you scanned a pile of single-sided sheets with a document feeder and ended up with blank backs, [Remove blank pages](https://pdfjade.com/remove-blank-pages) will drop them in one go. And keep in mind that a scan is a picture of text: you can't select or search it until it has been through OCR. [OCR PDF](https://pdfjade.com/ocr-pdf) reads the pages on your device and adds an invisible text layer, so the scan becomes searchable without looking any different. ## Questions ### Why is my scanned PDF so large? Each page is a full-resolution photo. A modern phone takes 12-megapixel pictures, which is far more than a printed page needs. The black and white option makes pages much lighter. ### Can I scan both sides of a page? Yes. Photograph the front, turn the sheet over and photograph the back; they'll follow each other in the PDF. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/scan-documents-with-your-phone --- # Why your PDF is so big, and how to make it smaller > A 40-page report weighs 300 KB. A three-page scan weighs 28 MB. The difference isn't the number of pages, it's what's on them. Email servers often refuse attachments above 20 or 25 MB, and many upload forms cap files at 5 or 10 MB. When a PDF is too heavy, the instinct is to look for a "compress" button. Before you do, it helps to know where the weight actually comes from, because the right fix depends on it. ## What takes up space in a PDF - **Text** is almost free. A page of plain text is a few kilobytes, even with the font embedded. - **Vector graphics**, charts and logos made of lines and shapes, are small too. - **Photos** are where size lives. One uncompressed photo can outweigh a hundred pages of text. - **Scans** are photos of every page, so a scanned document is all photo. - **Fonts** occasionally matter: a document using six full font families can carry a few megabytes of font data. ## Fix it at the source if you can The best compression happens before the PDF exists. If you made the file yourself: - In Word or Pages, resize photos to the size they appear on the page before exporting. A 4000-pixel image shown 8 cm wide is wasted weight. - When exporting, choose a "smaller file" or "standard" option rather than "best for printing" unless it really is going to a printer. - For scans, scan at 150 or 200 dpi in greyscale rather than 600 dpi in colour. For text documents it's indistinguishable on screen. ## When you only have the PDF Real compression means re-encoding the images inside the file and leaving the rest alone. That's what [Compress PDF](https://pdfjade.com/compress-pdf) does: it finds every photo and scanned page, brings it down to a resolution that still prints cleanly, re-saves it as a JPEG and throws away objects nothing points to. Text, fonts and vector drawings are left untouched, so the result stays sharp and searchable. Start with *Recommended*. If the file is a scan and still too heavy, *Maximum* redraws each page as a single image, which shrinks it the most but makes the text unselectable. If compression barely changes anything, the weight isn't in the images, and these work better: - **Drop what you don't need.** Sending three pages of a 60-page report? [Extract those pages](https://pdfjade.com/extract-pdf-pages) and the file shrinks with them. - **Remove blank pages** from scans with [Remove blank pages](https://pdfjade.com/remove-blank-pages). - **Convert a colour scan to black and white** with [Black and white PDF](https://pdfjade.com/grayscale-pdf) at 150 dpi. For a text-only scan this often cuts the size several times over. - **Use your computer's print dialog.** On a Mac, open the PDF in Preview and use *File → Export* with the *Reduce File Size* filter. On Windows, "Microsoft Print to PDF" re-creates the file, sometimes much lighter. - **Share a link instead** of an attachment if the recipient has a shared drive. ## A quick sanity check Divide the file size by the number of pages. Under 100 KB per page is normal for text documents. 300 KB to 1 MB per page is typical for scans. Several megabytes per page means images at a resolution nobody will ever see, and that's the file worth fixing at the source. ## Questions ### Does converting to black and white lose quality? Colour is lost and the page becomes an image, so text can't be selected anymore. For printed text documents the readability is usually just as good. ### Why did compression barely change my file? The images are already compressed, or most of the size comes from fonts or a long vector drawing. Extracting only the pages you need is then the most effective fix. ### Is compressing the same as zipping? No. A ZIP shrinks a PDF only a little, because images inside are already compressed, and the recipient has to unzip it. Re-encoding the images is what makes the real difference. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/why-is-my-pdf-so-big --- # How to fill in a PDF form, even one that isn't fillable > Some PDF forms let you click into the boxes. Others are just pictures of boxes. Here is how to handle both without printing anything. There are two kinds of PDF forms, and they look identical until you try to click in a box. A **fillable form** has real fields built into the file: text boxes, tick boxes, drop-down lists. A **flat form** is a document that was designed to be printed; the boxes are just lines drawn on the page. You can't type into a line, so flat forms need a different approach. ## Fillable forms 1. Open [Fill form](https://pdfjade.com/fill-pdf-form) and add the PDF. 2. The tool reads every field and shows them as a list: text boxes, tick boxes and choice lists, with their names. 3. Fill them in. Field names are sometimes cryptic (`txt_12b` is a classic); compare with the page if you're unsure which is which. 4. Tick *Lock the answers after filling (flatten)* if you're sending the form to someone who shouldn't change it. 5. Press *Save form*. If the tool says the PDF has no fillable fields, you have a flat form. ## Flat forms For a quick answer or two, [Add text](https://pdfjade.com/add-text-to-pdf) places a line of text at one of nine positions. For a real form with many boxes, use [PDF Studio](https://pdfjade.com/studio), which lets you click anywhere: 1. Open the PDF in the Studio. 2. Add a text box, type your answer, and drag it onto the line. Use the *Small print* style or set the size to around 10 pt so it matches typical form text. 3. Duplicate the box with `Ctrl`+`D` for the next answer; it keeps the same style. 4. Use the *Tick* element from *Elements* for check boxes, and *Draw* to sign. 5. Download the PDF. ## Why flatten? A filled-in fillable form still contains live fields, so anyone receiving it can change your answers, sometimes by accident when they open it. Flattening turns the answers into ordinary page content. Do it when you send a final version, and keep an unflattened copy for yourself in case you need to correct something later. You can also flatten separately with [Flatten PDF](https://pdfjade.com/flatten-pdf). ## A small courtesy Name the file something useful before you send it back: `lastname-application-2026.pdf` beats `form(3)-final-FINAL.pdf` for whoever has to file it. ## Questions ### Why do my answers disappear when someone else opens the form? Some viewers don't display form fields properly. Flattening the form before sending it fixes this, because the answers become part of the page. ### Can I fill in a scanned form? Yes. A scanned form is always flat, so type your answers on top of it with Add text or PDF Studio. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/fill-in-a-pdf-form --- # Getting rid of blank pages in scanned PDFs > You fed a stack of single-sided letters through a duplex scanner and now every second page is empty. Deleting them by hand is tedious; it doesn't have to be. Office scanners with automatic document feeders are usually set to scan both sides of every sheet. Great for double-sided documents; less great for the other 90 percent of paperwork, which ends up with an empty page after every real one. ## The fast way 1. Open [Remove blank pages](https://pdfjade.com/remove-blank-pages) and add the scan. 2. Leave *What counts as blank* on *Almost white*. 3. Press *Remove blank pages*. The message tells you which page numbers were removed. ## Choosing the right setting A scan of an empty page is rarely perfectly white. There's dust on the glass, a shadow along the edge, sometimes faint show-through from the other side of thin paper. The tool measures how much of each page is darker than near-white and compares it with a threshold. - **Completely white only** is for digitally created PDFs where empty pages are truly empty. - **Almost white** handles normal scans with a bit of dust or a page edge. - **Also faint marks and scan noise** is for thin paper with show-through or old scanners with streaks. Check the result, because a page with a single short line of text could be caught too. ## Check before you delete the original Look at the list of removed pages in the message. If a page with one line on it, like "This page intentionally left blank", was kept, that's correct behaviour: it isn't blank. If you want it gone anyway, use [Delete pages](https://pdfjade.com/delete-pdf-pages) with its number. When the scan contains a mix of single- and double-sided documents, it can be easier to see everything at once: open it in [Organize pages](https://pdfjade.com/organize-pdf), mark the pages you don't want and save. ## Prevent it next time Most scanners have a "skip blank pages" or "blank page removal" option hidden in their settings, often in the advanced menu of the scan profile. Turning it on saves you this step for every future scan. ## Questions ### Will it remove pages that only have a page number? Usually not, because a page number counts as content. With the loosest setting a very small mark might be ignored, so check the list of removed pages. ### Does this work on PDFs that aren't scans? Yes. Pages with nothing on them are detected the same way. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/remove-blank-pages-from-scans --- # How to print a PDF as a booklet > Fold a stack of A4 sheets in half, staple the spine, and the pages read in order. Getting there takes one setting, if you know which one. A booklet is made of sheets folded in half. Each sheet carries four pages, two on each side, and the pages are not in the order you'd expect. On an 8-page booklet, the front of the first sheet holds pages 8 and 1, and its back holds pages 2 and 7. Working this out by hand is a puzzle; a booklet layout does it for you. ## Making the booklet file 1. Open [Pages per sheet](https://pdfjade.com/n-up-pdf) and add your PDF. 2. Under *Layout*, choose *Booklet (fold in half)*. 3. Pick the *Sheet size* you'll print on, usually A4 or US Letter. Your A5 or half-letter pages will be scaled to fit side by side. 4. Press *Create layout* and download the file. ## Why multiples of four matter Every sheet carries four pages, so a booklet always has 4, 8, 12, 16… pages. If your document has 10 pages, two blank pages get added at the end. That's usually fine, but if you'd rather control where blanks go (say, after the cover so the content starts on a right-hand page), add them yourself first with [Insert blank pages](https://pdfjade.com/insert-blank-pages). ## Printing it Print the booklet file double-sided, flipping on the **short edge**. This is the setting people get wrong most often: the pages are side by side on a landscape sheet, so the paper has to flip along its short side for the back to come out the right way up. No double-sided printer? See [how to print double-sided by hand](https://pdfjade.com/guides/double-sided-printing-single-sided-printer); it works for booklets too. ## Folding and binding - Keep the sheets in the order they come out of the printer, fold the whole stack at once and press the fold with the back of a spoon. - Two staples on the fold are enough for up to about 12 sheets (48 pages). A long-reach stapler helps; otherwise open the stack on a folded towel and staple through into it, then bend the staple legs by hand. - Thick booklets push the inner pages outwards ("creep"). For anything above 40 pages, trim the outside edge with a paper cutter for a clean finish. ## Questions ### Can I make a booklet from A4 pages? Yes. A4 pages are scaled down to fit two per A4 sheet, so they print at A5 size. Use A3 sheets if you want the pages to stay full size. ### Which way do I flip the paper? On the short edge. The booklet sheets are landscape, so short-edge flipping keeps the back pages upright. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/print-a-pdf-as-a-booklet --- # Double-sided printing on a printer that can't do it > Plenty of home printers only print on one side. You can still print double-sided: print the odd pages, turn the stack over, print the even pages. The trick is old and works with any printer: print all the front sides first, put the stack back in, then print all the back sides. The two things that go wrong are the order of the pages and which way the paper goes back in. Both are easy to get right with a quick test. ## 1. Make two files Open [Odd or even pages](https://pdfjade.com/odd-even-pages) and add your document. Choose *Odd pages* and *Keep them*, and download. Do it again with *Even pages*. Name the files `fronts.pdf` and `backs.pdf` so you don't mix them up. If your document has an odd number of pages, the last sheet has no back. That's fine; just remember to take that sheet out before printing the backs, or add a blank page at the end with [Insert blank pages](https://pdfjade.com/insert-blank-pages). ## 2. Test with two sheets Before printing 40 pages, print the first two pages of `fronts.pdf`. Draw a small arrow pointing up on the top edge of each printed sheet, and note which side is face up when it comes out of the printer. Put those two sheets back in the tray and print the first two pages of `backs.pdf`. Look at the result: - If the backs are upside down, rotate the stack 180° next time. - If the backs printed on top of the fronts, flip the stack over. - If page 4 ended up behind page 1, your printer outputs face up; reverse the backs file with [Reverse pages](https://pdfjade.com/reverse-pdf). Write what worked on a sticky note and put it on the printer. You'll need it again. ## 3. Print the rest Print all of `fronts.pdf`, put the stack back the way your test showed, and print `backs.pdf`. Fan the paper before reloading it; sheets that just came out of a laser printer are warm and tend to stick together. ## The opposite problem If you scanned a double-sided document on a single-sided scanner, you have one file with all the fronts and one with all the backs, often in reverse order. [Interleave PDFs](https://pdfjade.com/interleave-pdf) merges them back into 1, 2, 3, 4, with an option for backs that were scanned in reverse. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/double-sided-printing-single-sided-printer --- # Turning iPhone photos (HEIC) into a PDF > You photographed a receipt, an ID card or a whiteboard. Now a form wants a PDF, and the files on your computer end in .heic. Since iOS 11 in 2017, iPhones save photos in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. The files are roughly half the size of a JPG at the same quality, which is great for your storage and less great when a website only accepts PDF or JPG. ## Converting a few photos 1. Open [HEIC to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/heic-to-pdf) and add your photos. You can select several at once. 2. Put them in order with the arrows. 3. Choose a page size. *Same as image* keeps each photo at its natural size; choose *A4* or *US Letter* if someone will print it. 4. Press *Create PDF*. The first conversion takes a moment longer, because the browser downloads a small HEIC decoder. Everything else, including the photos themselves, stays on your device. That matters here: photos of passports, payslips and contracts are precisely the files you shouldn't upload to a random converter. ## Photos of documents: a quick tip If the photos are of paper documents, [Scan to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/scan-to-pdf) may serve you better. Its black-and-white option turns grey, shadowy paper into clean white pages with dark text, which is easier to read and much lighter to email. ## Stopping your iPhone from using HEIC If you regularly need JPG files, go to *Settings → Camera → Formats* and choose *Most Compatible*. New photos are then saved as JPG. Existing photos stay HEIC. Alternatively, leave HEIC on and let the phone convert when sharing: in *Settings → Photos*, under *Transfer to Mac or PC*, choose *Automatic*. Photos sent by cable then arrive as JPG. ## Mixed formats Got a mix of HEIC, JPG and PNG files? [PNG to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/png-to-pdf) accepts all of them in one go. ## Questions ### Do I lose quality converting HEIC to PDF? Barely. The photo is decoded and stored in the PDF at full resolution as a high-quality JPG. ### Does it work with Live Photos? Yes. The still image is used; the short video part is ignored. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/convert-iphone-heic-photos-to-pdf --- # How to copy text out of a PDF (and why it sometimes comes out empty) > Sometimes copying from a PDF works perfectly. Sometimes you get nothing, or one long line of words in a strange order. Here's why, and what to do about it. Whether you can get text out of a PDF depends on how the PDF was made. Open it, try to select a single word with your mouse, and you'll know which situation you're in. ## Case 1: you can select words The PDF contains real text. [PDF to text](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-to-text) reads it page by page and gives you a plain `.txt` file, plus a box you can copy from. Tick *Mark page breaks* if you need to know where each page starts, which is handy when quoting a document. ## Case 2: you can't select anything The PDF is a scan or a photo. What looks like text is a picture of text, exactly like a photo of a newspaper. Text extraction returns nothing because there's nothing to extract. You need OCR (optical character recognition) to turn the picture back into characters. Run the file through [OCR PDF](https://pdfjade.com/ocr-pdf) first: it recognises the words on each page and adds them as an invisible layer. After that, the PDF behaves like a normal one, and PDF to text can extract it. Expect a few mistakes on blurry or crooked scans; check names and numbers before relying on them. For a single paragraph, phones are quicker: on an iPhone, press and hold on text in a photo (Live Text); on Android, Google Lens does the same. ## Case 3: text comes out, but jumbled A PDF stores each piece of text with its position on the page, not as flowing paragraphs. To rebuild reading order, the extractor groups pieces into lines and sorts them top to bottom. That works well for normal pages and less well for: - **Two-column layouts**, where lines from both columns can be interleaved. - **Tables**, which come out as rows of values without the grid. - **Text set at an angle** or along a curve. For a short passage, selecting and copying directly in a viewer often gives the cleanest result, because you choose the region. For the whole document, extract everything and tidy up in a text editor. ## Odd characters If you get boxes, question marks or ligatures like "fi" instead of "fi", the PDF uses a font without a proper character map. Search-and-replace fixes ligatures quickly; missing characters usually can't be recovered without OCR. ## Questions ### Can it extract text from a scanned PDF? Not directly, because a scan contains only images. Make it searchable with OCR PDF first, then extract the text. ### Is formatting kept? No. The result is plain text: no bold, no fonts, no tables. That's what makes it easy to paste anywhere. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/copy-text-from-a-pdf --- # How to watermark a PDF without ruining it > A good watermark tells people the status of a document without making it unreadable. Most bad watermarks fail on size, opacity or placement. Watermarks do one of two jobs. Either they communicate a status (DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, SAMPLE), or they discourage reuse by making a document traceable or unattractive to copy. The first job needs readability; the second needs coverage. Decide which one you're doing before choosing the settings. ## Settings that work - **Opacity: 15 to 30 percent.** Above that, the watermark starts competing with the text. Below 10 percent it disappears when printed on a cheap printer. - **Angle: 45° for a single mark.** Diagonal text crosses lines of body text rather than sitting on top of one line, which keeps the page readable. - **Colour: grey or a muted red.** Pure black at low opacity looks like a printing fault. - **One or two words.** "CONFIDENTIAL" works. "Confidential – do not distribute outside the finance team" doesn't; put that sentence in a footer. In [Watermark](https://pdfjade.com/watermark-pdf), the defaults (64 pt, 25 percent, 45°) follow these rules. Change the text and press *Add watermark*. ## Single mark or tiled? A single large mark is enough for status. If you're sending a sample that you don't want reused, tick *Repeat across the page*: a tiled pattern is much harder to crop out or paint over, and it survives screenshots of part of a page. For traceability, put the recipient's name in the watermark ("Prepared for J. Martin"). People are less likely to forward a document with their own name across every page. ## When a watermark is the wrong tool - For an approval status on a single page, a [stamp](https://pdfjade.com/stamp-pdf) (APPROVED, PAID) reads more naturally and doesn't cover the content. - For legal or version information, a [header or footer](https://pdfjade.com/add-header-footer) is cleaner and stays out of the way. ## A reality check A watermark added to a PDF is drawn into the page, but anyone with a PDF editor and some patience can remove it. It's a deterrent and a label, not security. For documents that truly must not leak, don't send them as PDF attachments at all. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/watermark-a-pdf-properly --- # How to split a long PDF into chapters > A 300-page manual is fine to keep, awful to email. Split it into chapters and send only the part people need. Splitting by chapter is just splitting by page ranges, once you know where each chapter starts. The work is mostly in finding those page numbers. ## 1. Find the chapter start pages Open the PDF in a viewer that shows the page number in its own toolbar, such as your browser or our [PDF viewer](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-viewer). Note the viewer's page number, not the one printed at the bottom of the page: the printed numbers often skip the cover and contents, so "page 1" of the text might be page 9 of the file. If the PDF has a table of contents, check two or three entries against the viewer to work out the offset. If chapter 2 is printed as page 31 but sits on file page 39, the offset is 8; add it to every entry. ## 2. Write the ranges In [Split PDF](https://pdfjade.com/split-pdf), choose *By page ranges* and enter the ranges separated by commas. For a book whose chapters start on pages 1, 39, 77 and 120: `1-38, 39-76, 77-119, 120-` The trailing dash means "to the end", so you don't need to know the last page number. Each range becomes its own file, and several files come back together in a ZIP. ## 3. Keep the front matter If every chapter should keep the cover or a legal notice, it's easier to split first and then add the cover to each part with [Merge PDF](https://pdfjade.com/merge-pdf). For just one chapter, [Extract pages](https://pdfjade.com/extract-pdf-pages) accepts a list like `1, 39-76` and keeps the pages in that order. ## Other ways to split - *Every N pages* is useful for fixed-length documents, such as a batch of two-page invoices scanned in one go. - *One file per page* turns each page into its own PDF, for example to send slides separately. ## Name the files The parts come out numbered in order. Renaming them to `manual-ch1-setup.pdf` rather than leaving `manual-1.pdf` takes a minute and saves everyone else guessing. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/split-a-pdf-into-chapters --- # Posting a PDF on Instagram or LinkedIn: turn pages into images > Instagram doesn't accept PDFs at all. LinkedIn does, but images often look better. Either way, you'll want each page as a crisp picture. Slide decks, menus, event programmes and infographics often start life as PDFs, and social networks are picky about what they accept. The reliable route is to convert each page to an image and post the images. ## For a carousel (one image per page) 1. Open [PDF to JPG](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-to-jpg) and add the PDF. 2. Choose *150 dpi*. An A4 page comes out about 1240 pixels wide, a good match for Instagram's 1080-pixel width. 3. Set *JPG quality* to 85 or 90. 4. Press *Convert to JPG*. Several pages arrive in a ZIP, numbered in order. Instagram crops tall portrait images, and an A4 page (about 1:1.41) is taller than any portrait ratio it accepts, so the top and bottom get cut. If you're designing for Instagram, start from a square page instead: [PDF Studio](https://pdfjade.com/studio) has a square social post size and can download pages directly as PNG or JPG. ## For a single long image Group chats and some messaging apps handle one tall image better than ten separate ones. [PDF to long image](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-to-long-image) stacks every page into one picture, with a gap between pages if you like. Keep the resolution at 100 dpi for long documents; browsers can't create images taller than about 32,000 pixels. ## LinkedIn document posts LinkedIn lets you upload a PDF directly as a "document" post, which shows as a swipeable carousel. It's a good option for decks. Keep the file under the size limit, give it a clear title (it's shown above the carousel), and make the first page work on its own as a cover, because that's all most people see. ## Make text readable on a phone Pages designed for A4 printing usually have text that's too small on a phone screen. A rule of thumb: if body text is smaller than about 24 pt on a square post, people won't read it. It's usually better to redesign the key pages than to post the print version as-is. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/pdf-to-instagram-linkedin-carousel --- # What your PDF says about you: remove metadata before you share it > Every PDF carries a small identity card: who made it, with what, and when. Sometimes that card says more than the document itself. Open a PDF's properties in any viewer and you'll find fields most people never look at: *Title*, *Author*, *Subject*, *Keywords*, *Creator*, *Producer*, creation and modification dates. They're filled in automatically from your account name and the software you used. ## Why it matters Usually it's harmless. Occasionally it's embarrassing or worse: - A title left over from an old template: "Offer letter – Candidate B". - The author field showing a colleague's name, or your personal account name on a company document. - A creation date at 2 a.m. the night before a deadline that was supposed to have been met weeks earlier. - Keywords from an internal draft that were never meant to leave the building. Journalists and lawyers check these fields routinely. It's one of the first things anyone looks at when a document's origin is in question. ## See what's in your file Open [Edit metadata](https://pdfjade.com/edit-pdf-metadata) and add the PDF. The current values are shown in the form, so you can read them before deciding anything. If you only want to fix one field, say a wrong title, change it there and save. ## Remove it all [Remove metadata](https://pdfjade.com/remove-pdf-metadata) clears the title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer and dates in one go. The pages themselves aren't touched. ## What metadata removal doesn't do - It doesn't remove text on the pages. Names in a footer, tracked changes that were printed into the PDF, or comments that were flattened stay visible. - It doesn't remove hidden text under a black box. A black rectangle drawn over a name in Word is often just a rectangle on top; the name is still there underneath and can be copied. Real redaction removes the text itself. - Annotations and form fields are separate from metadata. [Flatten](https://pdfjade.com/flatten-pdf) the PDF if you want form answers to become part of the page. For a quick share, removing metadata is good hygiene. For anything sensitive, check the pages too. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/remove-metadata-before-sharing-a-pdf --- # A short history of the PDF, from a memo to an ISO standard > The PDF started as an internal project at Adobe with a modest goal: send a document to any computer and have it look the same. Thirty years later it's everywhere. In 1991, John Warnock, one of Adobe's co-founders, wrote an internal paper describing what he called the Camelot project. The problem it described is familiar to anyone who has ever opened a Word file on a different computer: documents looked different depending on the machine, the fonts installed and the printer. Warnock wanted a way to capture a document exactly as it was meant to look and show it identically anywhere. Adobe already had part of the answer. PostScript, its page description language, could describe any printed page precisely, but it was a full programming language, heavy to interpret and awkward for viewing on screen. Camelot took the drawing model of PostScript and froze it into a simpler, structured file that a viewer could open quickly and jump around in. That file became the Portable Document Format. ## 1993: a slow start PDF 1.0 and the first version of Acrobat appeared in 1993. Early on, the software to create PDFs was sold, and so was the reader. Few people paid for software just to read documents, and the format was not an obvious success. Two decisions changed that. From version 2.0 in 1994, Adobe gave the reader away for free. And over the following years, organisations that needed to publish documents to the public, from government tax forms to manuals and academic papers, found that PDF solved their problem: one file, printable, identical everywhere. ## Growing features Each new version added capabilities: links and bookmarks, then forms, then encryption, transparency, embedded multimedia, 3D, layers. Version numbers went from 1.0 up to 1.7. The format grew from a static printout into something closer to a small application container, which is also why some PDFs today can do surprising things. ## Specialised flavours Different industries needed different guarantees, which led to standardised subsets. PDF/X, for reliable printing, was standardised from 2001. PDF/A, for long-term archiving, followed in 2005. PDF/E for engineering documents and PDF/UA for accessibility came later, in 2008 and 2012. We explain them in [PDF/A, PDF/X and PDF/UA explained](https://pdfjade.com/guides/pdf-a-pdf-x-pdf-ua-explained). ## 2008: handing it over In 2007 Adobe announced it would hand the specification to a standards body, and in July 2008 PDF 1.7 was published as ISO 32000-1. From then on, PDF was an open international standard rather than one company's format. Adobe never published a "1.8"; the next version came from the ISO process. PDF 2.0, ISO 32000-2, was published in 2017, with a revised edition in 2020. Since 2023 the PDF 2.0 specification can be downloaded at no cost, thanks to sponsorship arranged by the PDF Association. ## Why it lasted Plenty of formats from 1993 are gone. PDF survived because it does one thing that's genuinely hard: it fixes the appearance of a page. That's also its main weakness. A PDF is easy to read and print, and awkward to edit, which is exactly why tools like the ones on this site exist. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/history-of-the-pdf --- # PDF/A, PDF/X and PDF/UA: what the letters mean > A court asks for PDF/A, a print shop wants PDF/X, an accessibility audit mentions PDF/UA. They're all PDFs, each with a stricter set of rules. A normal PDF can contain almost anything: fonts that aren't embedded, colours defined loosely, scripts, links to external files. That freedom is convenient and, for some uses, a liability. The lettered standards are subsets of PDF that forbid the risky parts and require the useful ones. ## PDF/A: for archiving PDF/A (ISO 19005) exists so a document can still be opened and displayed correctly in decades. It requires everything needed to render the page to be inside the file, and bans anything that depends on the outside world or could change. - All fonts must be embedded. - Colours must be defined in a device-independent way. - No encryption, no JavaScript, no audio or video, no links to external content needed for display. There are several parts. PDF/A-1 (2005) was based on PDF 1.4. PDF/A-2 (2011) moved to the ISO version of PDF and allowed transparency and layers. PDF/A-3 (2012) allows other files to be attached, which is how some e-invoice formats carry machine-readable data inside a human-readable PDF. PDF/A-4 (2020) is based on PDF 2.0. Letters after the number, like PDF/A-2b, are conformance levels: "b" means the visual appearance is preserved, "a" adds requirements for structure and accessibility, "u" requires text to be mapped to Unicode. Courts, public archives and many government portals ask for PDF/A. Most word processors can export it: look for a "PDF/A" or "archive" checkbox in the PDF export options. ## PDF/X: for printing PDF/X (ISO 15930) is the print industry's standard. Its job is to make sure what comes off the press matches what the designer approved. Fonts must be embedded, colours must be suitable for printing (with an "output intent" describing the target press), and the page boxes that define trim and bleed must be set. Common versions are PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3 and PDF/X-4. If a print shop asks for one, export it from your design software; it isn't something to add afterwards. ## PDF/UA: for accessibility PDF/UA (ISO 14289) is about people who use screen readers and other assistive technology. A PDF/UA file is fully tagged: headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and figures are marked up, images have text alternatives, reading order is defined. PDF/UA-1 dates from 2012; PDF/UA-2, based on PDF 2.0, was published in 2024. Our [accessible PDF checklist](https://pdfjade.com/guides/accessible-pdf-checklist) covers the practical side. ## PDF/E: for engineering PDF/E (ISO 24517) targets engineering and technical documents, including drawings with layers and 3D content. You're unlikely to need it unless you work in construction or manufacturing. ## Can a file be several at once? Yes. A file can conform to PDF/A and PDF/UA at the same time, for example, and archives of public documents increasingly ask for both. ## A note on our tools Tools that rewrite a PDF, including ours, don't guarantee the output still conforms to these standards. If you must deliver PDF/A or PDF/X, make the final export from the original software and do any merging or page editing before that step. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/pdf-a-pdf-x-pdf-ua-explained --- # A4 vs Letter, and why the A sizes fit together so neatly > Most of the world prints on A4. The United States and Canada print on Letter. The two are close enough to be confused and different enough to cut off your footer. A4 measures 210 × 297 mm. US Letter measures 8.5 × 11 inches, which is 215.9 × 279.4 mm. So Letter is about 6 mm wider and A4 about 18 mm taller. Put one on top of the other and neither fully covers the other. *A4 (blue) and US Letter (dashed) at the same scale.* ## Where each one is used A4 is standard almost everywhere: Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania and most of South America. Letter, along with Legal (8.5 × 14 inches) and Tabloid (11 × 17), is standard in the United States and Canada, and common in Mexico, the Philippines and a few other countries. ## The clever part: the A series The A sizes come from the ISO 216 standard, which goes back to a German standard (DIN 476) from 1922. The idea is simple: - A0 has an area of exactly one square metre. - Every sheet has sides in the ratio 1 : √2 (about 1 : 1.414). - Cut a sheet in half across its long side and you get the next size, with the same proportions. So two A4 pages side by side make an A3, and an A4 folded in half is A5. That's why enlarging A4 to A3 on a photocopier (141 percent) or shrinking A3 to A4 (71 percent) works without margins changing shape. Letter has no such relationship: two Letter pages side by side make 11 × 17 inches, which has different proportions again. The B series sits between A sizes (B4 is between A3 and A4), and the C series is for envelopes: an A4 sheet fits flat into a C4 envelope, folded once into C5, twice into C6. ## Printing A4 on Letter, and the other way round Printing an A4 PDF on Letter paper at actual size cuts about 18 mm off the height, usually the footer. Printing Letter on A4 trims a few millimetres from the sides. Two fixes: - In the print dialog, choose *Fit to page* or *Shrink to printable area*. The page is scaled down by a few percent and nothing is lost. - Convert the PDF itself with [Change page size](https://pdfjade.com/resize-pdf-pages), which fits every page onto the target size with the margins you choose. Do this before sending a document across the Atlantic. ## In points PDF measures pages in points, 72 to the inch. A4 is 595.28 × 841.89 points, Letter is 612 × 792. If you ever open a PDF's properties and see those numbers, now you know which paper it was made for. Our [paper size calculator](https://pdfjade.com/guides/paper-size-calculator) lists every common size in millimetres, inches, points and pixels. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/a4-vs-letter-paper-sizes --- # Are online PDF converters safe to use? > It depends on what happens to your file after you click "upload". Some services are careful. Some are vague. A few tools never receive the file at all. Most online PDF tools work by uploading your file to a server, processing it there and offering the result for download. Nothing about that is inherently unsafe. Large, reputable services encrypt the connection, delete files after a short time and publish clear policies. The risk is that you usually can't verify any of it, and the documents people convert are often exactly the ones that matter: payslips, contracts, ID scans, medical letters. ## What to check before uploading - **Retention.** Does the policy say how long files are kept? "Deleted after one hour" is specific. "Kept as long as necessary" is not. - **Location and law.** Where are the servers, and which privacy law applies? In the EU, GDPR gives you rights over personal data in uploaded documents. - **Who runs it.** A company with a name, an address and a support contact is accountable. An anonymous site with heavy advertising has less reason to be careful. - **What else is uploaded.** Some sites ask you to connect cloud storage or create an account to download. Ask yourself why. ## Tools that don't upload Some jobs can be done entirely in your browser: merging, splitting, rotating, adding text or page numbers, converting images. In that case the website only delivers the program; your file is opened from your disk by the page itself and never travels anywhere. That's how every tool on this site works. *An upload sends a copy of your file away. Local processing keeps it on the device.* ## How to check for yourself You don't have to take anyone's word for it, including ours. 1. Open your browser's developer tools (`F12` on most computers) and go to the *Network* tab. 2. Use the tool on a test file. 3. Look at the requests. An upload shows up as a large request going out, roughly the size of your file. A local tool only loads scripts and fonts. A simpler test: use the tool once so its scripts load, then turn on airplane mode and try again with another file. A local tool keeps working. ## Jobs that do need a server Browsers can do more than people expect: compression, AES-256 encryption and even OCR now run locally. A few conversions remain genuinely hard without a server, mainly PDF to editable Word or Excel with the layout intact. For those, a server-based service is the practical choice. Use a well-known one, remove anything sensitive you don't need to send, and strip the [metadata](https://pdfjade.com/guides/remove-metadata-before-sharing-a-pdf) first. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/are-online-pdf-converters-safe --- # Why can't I just edit this PDF? > You want to fix one typo, and the PDF won't let you. It isn't being difficult on purpose. A PDF is closer to a printout than to a document. A Word document stores paragraphs. When you add a word, the paragraph reflows, the next line moves down and the page breaks adjust. A PDF stores the result of that process: this glyph, in this font, at these coordinates. There are no paragraphs to reflow, only positioned characters. Edit a word and nothing around it knows it should move. *A PDF page is a stack of drawing instructions: text, vector shapes and images on a fixed page.* ## Four reasons a PDF resists editing 1. **Fixed layout.** As above, there is no flow. Replacing "two" with "three" means the rest of the line has to be pushed along by hand. 2. **Font subsets.** To keep files small, PDFs usually embed only the characters actually used. If the document never used a capital Q, the embedded font has no Q, and an editor has to substitute a different font. 3. **Scans.** In a scanned PDF there's no text at all, just pictures of it. Editing means painting. 4. **Permissions.** Some PDFs carry restrictions on editing, printing or copying, set by whoever created them. ## What you can actually do - **Go back to the source.** If you or a colleague have the original Word, Pages or InDesign file, edit it and export again. It's the only way to get a clean result for anything more than a word or two. - **Cover and retype.** For a small correction, place a white box over the old text and type the new text on top. In [PDF Studio](https://pdfjade.com/studio), use the *Whiteout* element, then add a text box and match the size. The original text is still underneath, so don't use this to hide confidential information. - **Add rather than change.** Notes, dates, names on a form: [Add text](https://pdfjade.com/add-text-to-pdf) or the Studio handle these without touching the existing content. - **Extract and rebuild.** For a long text-heavy document, [extract the text](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-to-text), paste it into a word processor and rebuild the layout. Tedious, but reliable. - **Use a full PDF editor.** Desktop editors can modify existing text in place, with varying success depending on the fonts. For frequent, serious editing, they're worth it. ## The upside The same rigidity that makes a PDF annoying to edit is why it's trusted for contracts, invoices and forms: what the sender saw is what you see. Every editing tool, ours included, works by adding to that fixed page rather than rewriting it. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/why-cant-i-edit-this-pdf --- # 72, 150 or 300 dpi? Resolution explained for PDFs and images > When you convert a PDF to images, or scan a page, you're asked for a resolution. Pick too low and text is fuzzy; too high and files balloon for nothing. dpi means dots per inch: how many pixels are used for each inch of the page. A PDF page has a physical size (A4 is 8.27 × 11.69 inches), so the resolution decides how many pixels wide the resulting image is. *The same letter drawn with 72, 150 and 300 pixels per inch.* ## The numbers for common pages | Resolution | A4 (pixels) | US Letter (pixels) | Good for | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 72 dpi | 595 × 842 | 612 × 792 | Thumbnails, previews | | 150 dpi | 1240 × 1754 | 1275 × 1650 | Screens, email, social posts | | 200 dpi | 1654 × 2339 | 1700 × 2200 | Zooming in, small print | | 300 dpi | 2480 × 3508 | 2550 × 3300 | Printing | Doubling the resolution doubles the width and the height, so the image has four times as many pixels and is roughly four times as heavy. ## Which to choose - **On screen, 150 dpi.** A typical laptop screen shows a full A4 page about 1000 pixels tall. 150 dpi gives you enough to zoom a little. - **For printing, 300 dpi.** That's the standard for print. Going higher rarely shows on paper. - **For small text, 200 dpi.** Footnotes in 7 pt type can look soft at 150 dpi when people zoom in. - **Never 72 dpi for text you want to read.** It's fine for a thumbnail, poor for anything else. ## Why 72? PDF measures everything in points, and there are 72 points in an inch. Converting at 72 dpi means one point becomes one pixel, which is why an A4 page at 72 dpi is 595 pixels wide: that's its width in points. The number also echoes early Macintosh screens, which showed 72 pixels per inch, so a document on screen matched its printed size. ## Scanning The same logic applies to scanners. For text documents, 200 to 300 dpi in greyscale is plenty, and 150 dpi is often enough if the scan will only be read on screen. Colour at 600 dpi is for photographs and artwork, and it produces very large files. More on that in [why your PDF is so big](https://pdfjade.com/guides/why-is-my-pdf-so-big). Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/dpi-explained --- # Electronic signature or digital signature: what's the difference? > The words are used interchangeably, and they shouldn't be. One is a mark that shows intent. The other is a cryptographic seal that proves the file hasn't changed. This is general information, not legal advice. Rules depend on the country and the type of document; when it matters, ask whoever will receive the document what they accept. ## Electronic signature An electronic signature is any electronic way of showing that you agree to something: an image of your handwritten signature on a PDF, typing your name at the bottom of an email, ticking an "I agree" box, signing with a finger on a tablet at a delivery. The law in many countries recognises these as valid for a wide range of everyday agreements. In the United States, the ESIGN Act of 2000 and the UETA give electronic signatures the same standing as handwritten ones for most transactions. What a simple electronic signature doesn't do is protect the document. Anyone could, in principle, copy the signature image onto another PDF or change the text after it was signed. ## Digital signature A digital signature is a specific technology. The signing software computes a fingerprint of the document and encrypts it with the signer's private key, backed by a certificate that identifies them. Anyone opening the PDF can check two things: who signed it, and whether a single byte has changed since. In PDF viewers this shows up as a signature panel with a green tick, or a warning if the file was altered. ## The European picture: eIDAS In the EU, the eIDAS regulation defines three levels: - **Simple electronic signature**: any electronic signature, such as a drawn signature on a PDF. - **Advanced electronic signature**: uniquely linked to the signer, able to identify them, and able to detect any later change to the document. In practice, a digital signature with a certificate. - **Qualified electronic signature**: an advanced signature created with a certified device and a qualified certificate from an approved provider. It has the same legal effect as a handwritten signature across the EU. ## What our tool does [Sign PDF](https://pdfjade.com/sign-pdf) creates a simple electronic signature: it places an image of your signature on the page. That's what most "sign and return" requests need, from rental forms to quotes. It is not a certificate-based digital signature. If you're asked for an "advanced", "qualified" or "certified" signature, use a signing service or the tools your bank, government portal or employer provides. ## A practical tip After signing a form with a drawn signature, [flatten](https://pdfjade.com/flatten-pdf) it before sending. The answers and signature become part of the page, which makes accidental changes less likely, though, as above, it's not tamper-proof. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/electronic-vs-digital-signature --- # Making accessible PDFs: a practical checklist > A PDF that looks fine can be unusable for someone with a screen reader. Most of the fixes happen in the software you write in, before the PDF exists. Screen readers read a PDF through its structure, not its appearance. If the file has no structure, a blind reader may hear the page as a jumble, hear nothing at all, or have to listen to every header and footer on every page. Accessibility isn't a niche concern either: in the EU, the European Accessibility Act has applied since June 2025 to many products and services, and public bodies in many countries already have rules for documents they publish. ## The checklist 1. **Real text, not images of text.** Scanned pages are pictures. Without OCR, a screen reader has nothing to read. A quick test: try to select a word. If you can't, run the file through [OCR PDF](https://pdfjade.com/ocr-pdf). 2. **Tags.** A tagged PDF contains a hidden structure tree that says "this is a heading, this is a paragraph, this is a list". Export from Word, Google Docs or InDesign with "tagged PDF" or "accessibility" enabled; printing to PDF usually drops tags. 3. **Real headings.** Use the heading styles in your editor (Heading 1, Heading 2) rather than bold, larger text. Headings become navigation points. 4. **Reading order.** Columns, sidebars and text boxes should be read in a sensible order. Check it in an accessibility checker. 5. **Alternative text for images.** Every meaningful image needs a short description. Decorative images should be marked as decorative so they're skipped. 6. **A document title.** Set the title in the file's properties and ask the viewer to display it instead of the file name. You can check and set the title with [Edit metadata](https://pdfjade.com/edit-pdf-metadata). 7. **The document language.** So screen readers use the right pronunciation. 8. **Tables with header rows.** Mark the header row as headers, avoid merged cells where you can, and don't use tables for layout. 9. **Meaningful links.** "Download the 2026 price list" rather than "click here". 10. **Contrast and colour.** Text should stand out from the background, and information shouldn't rely on colour alone, for example red and green in a chart. ## Tools that remove accessibility Many PDF operations, including some of ours such as converting to black and white or flattening, redraw content in a way that can lose tags. Treat accessibility as part of the final export: merge, reorder and annotate first, then produce the accessible version from the source. ## Checking Adobe Acrobat's accessibility checker and the free PAC checker from the PDF/UA community are the usual tools. And nothing replaces trying it: turn on the screen reader built into your computer or phone and listen to the first page. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/accessible-pdf-checklist --- # Bates numbering explained, with examples > Law firms, auditors and medical records teams stamp every page with numbers like ABC000123. Here's what that is, why it exists, and how to do it. Bates numbering gives every page in a set of documents a unique identifier. Instead of "page 4 of the third email attachment from March", you can write "ABC000187", and everyone knows which page you mean. The name comes from the Bates Automatic Numbering Machine, a hand stamp invented by Edwin G. Bates in the late 19th century that advanced its number by one each time it was pressed. ## Anatomy of a Bates number - **A prefix** identifying the party, the case or the batch: `SMITH`, `ACME-`, `PLT`. - **A number** with a fixed number of digits and leading zeros, typically six to eight: `000187`. Fixed width keeps them sortable. - **Optionally a suffix**, for example a confidentiality marker. Numbers run continuously across all documents in a production. If the first file ends at `ACME000042`, the second starts at `ACME000043`. ## Conventions worth following - Bottom right is the usual position. Avoid the bottom centre if the documents have their own page numbers there. - Keep a log: which file starts and ends at which number. It's what you'll consult months later. - Number after the set is final. Inserting a page later breaks the sequence, and suffixes like `ACME000043.001` get messy. - Never renumber documents that have already been produced and cited. ## Adding Bates numbers 1. Open [Bates numbering](https://pdfjade.com/bates-numbering) and add the PDFs in production order. 2. Set the *Prefix*, the *Start at* number and the number of *Digits*. 3. Choose the position, usually bottom right, and a small size around 8 to 10 pt. 4. Press *Add Bates numbers*. The message shows the first and last number used, which goes straight into your log. Each number sits on a small white background so it stays legible over content near the edge. For a single document where you only need page numbers, [Page numbers](https://pdfjade.com/add-page-numbers) is simpler. ## Bates numbers versus page numbers Page numbers restart in every document and describe position within it. Bates numbers never restart and describe position within the whole production. Many productions carry both: the original page numbers from the author, and the Bates number added when the documents were exchanged. Ten questions, explanations after each answer, no sign-up, no email at the end. Pick an answer to see whether you were right and why. Your score appears at the end. Want the background behind the questions? Start with [a short history of the PDF](https://pdfjade.com/guides/history-of-the-pdf) or [A4 vs Letter](https://pdfjade.com/guides/a4-vs-letter-paper-sizes). 1. In what year did John Warnock write the memo that started the PDF project? - 1985 - 1991 - 1996 - 2001 Right.: 1991. The Camelot project memo dates from 1991. PDF 1.0 followed in 1993. 2. What does the "A" in PDF/A stand for? - Accessible - Archive - Adobe - Advanced Right.: Archive. PDF/A is the archiving standard, designed so files can still be displayed correctly decades later. 3. How many points are there in an inch? - 72 - 96 - 100 - 300 Right.: 72. PDF measures everything in points, 72 to the inch. A4 is 595 points wide. 4. Which is taller? - A4 - US Letter - They're the same height - It depends on the printer Right.: A4. A4 is 297 mm tall, Letter is 279.4 mm. Letter is slightly wider, though. 5. Cut an A3 sheet in half across its long side. What do you get? - Two A2 sheets - Two A4 sheets - Two A5 sheets - Two Letter sheets Right.: Two A4 sheets. Each A size is half of the previous one, so A3 halves into two A4 sheets. 6. Which ISO standard number is PDF itself? - ISO 9001 - ISO 216 - ISO 32000 - ISO 27001 Right.: ISO 32000. PDF became ISO 32000-1 in 2008. PDF 2.0 is ISO 32000-2. 7. You can't select any text in a PDF. What's the most likely reason? - It's encrypted - It's a scan - It's PDF/A - It has too many pages Right.: It's a scan. A scanned page is an image of text. You need OCR to turn it into real characters. 8. What is Bates numbering mostly used for? - Numbering chapters in novels - Identifying every page in legal document productions - Counting PDF downloads - Marking photo copyright Right.: Identifying every page in legal document productions. Law firms and auditors stamp each page with a unique, continuous number such as ABC000123. 9. At 300 dpi, roughly how wide is an A4 page in pixels? - 595 - 1240 - 2480 - 4960 Right.: 2480. 8.27 inches × 300 = about 2480 pixels. 10. A drawn signature image on a PDF is… - A qualified digital signature - A simple electronic signature - Always invalid - The same as a certificate Right.: A simple electronic signature. It shows intent, which is enough for many documents, but it doesn't carry a certificate or protect the file from changes. A scanned PDF blows past that in a handful of pages. Here's how to shrink it without retyping anything. A PDF is almost never too big because of its text. Text is tiny: a 40-page report of plain paragraphs is often under a megabyte. What makes a PDF heavy is images: a page scanned at high resolution, a screenshot pasted in at full size, or a photo dropped into a report without resizing. Each one can weigh several megabytes on its own, and a 10-page scanned contract can easily clear 40MB. ## The limits that actually matter Email providers cap attachments well below what they let you store. As of this writing, Gmail allows 25MB per message, Outlook.com and Microsoft 365 allow 20MB, and Yahoo Mail allows 25MB. Go over, and the message either bounces back or quietly fails to send, depending on the provider. Company mail servers often set a lower limit than the public ones, sometimes 10MB or less. ## What compression actually does Compressing a PDF re-encodes the images inside it at a lower resolution and quality, the same trade-off as saving a JPEG at 60% instead of 100%. Text, vector graphics and form fields aren't touched, because they're already compact and lossless. That's why a scanned PDF compresses dramatically (it's almost entirely image data) while a text report barely shrinks at all (there's little left to compress). [Compress PDF](https://pdfjade.com/compress-pdf) runs this in your browser: pick a level, and it redraws every page's image content at a lower quality before rebuilding the file. Nothing is uploaded to do it, so a contract or a medical scan never leaves your device just to make it smaller. ## If it's still too big A few scanned pages at very high resolution can resist compression and still land over 20MB. At that point, three options: split the document and send it in two emails with [Split PDF](https://pdfjade.com/split-pdf); scan the originals again at a lower resolution if you still have them (150–200 dpi is plenty for a readable document, see [DPI explained](https://pdfjade.com/guides/dpi-explained)); or share a link instead of an attachment, through whatever cloud storage you already use. ## A quick way to check first Before compressing anything, open [Count pages](https://pdfjade.com/count-pdf-pages) or just check the file's size in your file manager. If a 5-page PDF is already 30MB, it's almost certainly scanned at an unnecessarily high resolution, and compression will usually cut it to a fraction of that in one pass. ## Questions ### Will compression make my PDF blurry? At light or medium settings, no meaningful difference is visible on screen, especially for scanned text pages. Push it to the smallest setting and photos can start to show softening or JPEG-style artefacts, so preview the result before sending something that needs to look sharp. ### Does compressing a PDF remove its text or formatting? No. Compression only re-encodes images. Text stays selectable and searchable, fonts stay embedded, and form fields and links keep working. ### Is there a file size limit on this tool? No fixed limit. Everything runs on your device, so the practical ceiling is your browser's available memory rather than a server quota. ### Can I compress a PDF on my phone? Yes, the page works the same in a mobile browser. Very large scans can be slower on an older phone simply because it has less memory to work with. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/how-to-compress-a-pdf-for-email --- # How to password protect a PDF (and what the password actually protects) > Payslips, contracts, medical results: some PDFs shouldn't open for just anyone. Here's how PDF passwords actually work, and what they don't do. A PDF can carry two different kinds of password, and they protect different things. An **open password** (sometimes called a user password) encrypts the whole document: without it, the file won't open in any reader at all. A **permissions password** (an owner password) leaves the file readable but restricts actions like printing, copying text or editing, for readers who follow the rules enforced by their PDF software. [Protect PDF](https://pdfjade.com/protect-pdf) sets the open password: the one that actually stops someone from reading the file. ## How the encryption works Modern PDF encryption (AES-256, the current standard) scrambles the file's contents so that without the correct password, the data is unreadable, not just hidden. This happens entirely in your browser: the file and the password you choose never leave your device, so there's no server in between that could keep a copy of either. ## What a password doesn't protect against It's worth being precise about the limits. Once someone has the password and the file is open, nothing stops them from taking a screenshot, printing it, or retyping what they read. A password protects the file in transit and at rest, such as sitting in an inbox or a shared drive, not what a legitimate reader chooses to do with the content afterwards. It also isn't a substitute for a digital signature if what you need is proof of who approved a document; that's a separate feature, covered in [electronic vs digital signatures](https://pdfjade.com/guides/electronic-vs-digital-signature). ## Choosing and sharing the password Use a password the recipient can actually receive and type, not just a strong one. A short passphrase sent through a different channel than the email carrying the PDF, a text message or a phone call, is both more secure and more usable than a complex password typed into the same email thread as the attachment, which defeats the purpose if that inbox is ever compromised. ## If you forget it There's no recovery option, by design: a password a company could quietly bypass wouldn't be protecting much. If you encrypted your own file and lost the password, [Unlock PDF](https://pdfjade.com/unlock-pdf) can remove protection from a file if you already know the password (useful once a document no longer needs to be locked), but it cannot recover a password you don't have. ## Questions ### What encryption does this use? AES-256, the current PDF encryption standard, applied entirely in your browser. ### Can I remove a password later? Yes, with Unlock PDF, as long as you still know the current password. There's no way to remove a password you don't know; that's what makes it meaningful protection. ### Does a password stop someone from printing or copying the text? Not once the file is open with the correct password. If you need to restrict printing or copying for readers who already have access, that's a separate permissions setting handled differently than the open password described here. ### Is my file uploaded to set the password? No. The file is read and encrypted inside your browser and never sent to a server. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/how-to-password-protect-a-pdf --- # Your PDF keeps rotating back to sideways: the actual fix > You rotate it, close the file, and it's sideways again. It's not a bug in your reader; the file itself never changed. Here's what's actually happening. Most PDF readers, including Preview on Mac, Adobe Reader and the PDF viewer built into Chrome, let you rotate a page's on-screen view with a toolbar button or a keyboard shortcut. That rotation is often a **display setting only**: it changes how that page looks in that specific window, in that specific app, right now. Close the file and reopen it, or open it in a different app, or attach it to an email, and it can snap back to the orientation stored in the file, because the file itself was never changed. ## View rotation vs. page rotation A PDF page stores an actual rotation value as part of its data: 0°, 90°, 180° or 270°. A reader's rotate button sometimes writes that value permanently when you save, and sometimes just rotates the display temporarily until you tell it to save in a specific way, like File → Export rather than a plain save, and the exact behaviour varies by app and by version. That inconsistency is the whole source of the frustration: it's easy to rotate, look at a correctly-oriented page, and still end up with a file that reverts. ## The reliable fix [Rotate PDF](https://pdfjade.com/rotate-pdf) writes the rotation directly into the file's page data, the same value every reader respects, so there's no ambiguity between "looks right here" and "is actually right." Add the file, choose the rotation, and the download is correctly oriented everywhere: in a browser, in Preview, printed, or opened by someone else entirely. ## Mixed orientations in one document A scanned document often has a few pages fed in sideways while the rest are upright, typically a landscape table or chart inside an otherwise portrait report. Rather than rotating the whole file and making the other pages wrong, rotate only the affected pages: the tool lets you apply a rotation to a chosen page range instead of the entire document, so a single landscape page can be fixed without touching the rest. ## Questions ### Why does my PDF look right in Preview but sideways when I email it? Preview's rotate command doesn't always rewrite the file's underlying orientation value on a plain save; it can be a per-window display setting. The recipient's app reads the file's stored data, not your screen, so it shows the original orientation. ### Does rotating lose any quality? No. The pages themselves aren't redrawn, only the orientation value is changed, so text stays sharp and selectable and images are untouched. ### Can I rotate just one page out of a 50-page PDF? Yes, specific pages or ranges can be rotated independently of the rest of the document. ### Will this fix a PDF that's permanently rotated the wrong way from a bad scan? Yes, that's exactly this case: the scanner wrote the wrong orientation into the file, and rotating it here writes the correct one in permanently. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/pdf-wont-save-after-rotating-fix --- # How to convert a PDF to JPG images (and photos back to a PDF) > Dropping a page into a slide, posting it online, or running it through something that only accepts images: here's how the conversion works both ways. A PDF page and a JPG image serve different purposes. A PDF keeps text selectable, searchable and crisp at any zoom level, which is exactly wrong for the few situations where you need a page as a flat picture instead: pasting one page into a slide deck or a design tool that only accepts images, posting a page to social media, or using a page as the input to something that expects a photo rather than a document. ## Converting a page to an image [PDF to JPG](https://pdfjade.com/pdf-to-jpg) renders each page of the file as an image at the resolution you choose, in your browser. A single-page PDF becomes one JPG; a multi-page PDF becomes a ZIP file with one JPG per page, named in order. ## Choosing a resolution Resolution controls both sharpness and file size. For a page that will stay on screen, such as a social post or a slide, 150 dpi is usually sharp enough and keeps the file small. For something that might be printed, or zoomed into, 300 dpi holds up better. The trade-offs, and what dpi actually measures, are covered in [DPI explained](https://pdfjade.com/guides/dpi-explained). If you'd rather keep the image at a fixed pixel size regardless of dpi, the [paper size calculator](https://pdfjade.com/guides/paper-size-calculator) shows the pixel dimensions for common page sizes at a given resolution. ## Going the other way: photos into a PDF The reverse job, turning one or more photos into a single document, is just as common: a few pages of a contract shot with a phone camera, or a handful of receipt photos that need to travel as one file instead of several. [JPG to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/jpg-to-pdf) combines any number of images into a single PDF, one image per page, in the order you arrange them. For photos taken with an iPhone that are saved as HEIC rather than JPG, [HEIC to PDF](https://pdfjade.com/heic-to-pdf) does the same conversion directly, without needing to convert the format first. ## Questions ### What resolution should I use? 150 dpi for anything staying on screen, 300 dpi if it might be printed or viewed zoomed in. Going much higher mainly increases file size without a visible difference. ### Does converting to JPG make the text blurry? The text is rendered as part of the image at the resolution you pick, so it's as sharp as that resolution allows, but it's no longer selectable or searchable text the way it is in the original PDF. ### Can I convert just one page out of a long PDF? Yes, pages can be extracted first with Extract pages, then converted, or convert the whole file and use only the JPG you need from the resulting set. ### Is there a limit to how many photos I can combine into one PDF? No fixed limit. Everything runs on your device, so dozens of photos are fine; very large, high-resolution photo sets may be slower on an older phone. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/how-to-convert-pdf-to-jpg --- # How to add page numbers to a PDF > A report, a manuscript, a bundle of exhibits for a filing: each wants numbers placed differently. Here's how to add them, and when you actually need something else. [Add page numbers](https://pdfjade.com/add-page-numbers) prints a number onto every page of a PDF, in a position and format you choose, directly into the page content rather than as a separate overlay that depends on the viewer. Once added, the numbers show up the same way in any reader and on any printout. ## What to choose, and why it matters **Position** usually follows convention: bottom centre or bottom right for most documents, top for some academic or legal formats. **Format** matters for anything someone will reference later: "Page 3" is fine for a short document, but "3 of 40" tells a reader how much is left, useful for a report that might be printed and read away from a screen. **Starting number** matters when a cover page or table of contents shouldn't count as page 1, a common request: numbering can start from a chosen page rather than the very first one, so the content itself begins at "1." ## When plain numbers aren't what you need Plain sequential numbers restart at 1 for every document and say nothing about which document a page came from. That's a problem for a specific case: a bundle of exhibits, contracts or records submitted together, where every page across every file needs a unique, traceable identifier, such as `ABC000001`, that survives even if pages are separated later. That's what Bates numbering is for, a different, more rigid scheme used in legal and compliance filings; see [Bates numbering explained](https://pdfjade.com/guides/bates-numbering-explained) and [Bates numbering](https://pdfjade.com/bates-numbering) if that's the actual requirement rather than ordinary page numbers. ## Combining with a header or footer If a page number needs to sit alongside a date, a document title or a confidentiality notice, rather than stand alone, [Add header and footer](https://pdfjade.com/add-header-footer) places all of that together along the top or bottom of each page in one pass. ## Questions ### Can I start numbering from a page other than the first? Yes, choose a starting page so earlier pages, such as a cover sheet, stay unnumbered or are skipped from the count. ### Can I make it say "Page 3 of 40" instead of just "3"? Yes, that format is one of the available options, and the total page count updates automatically to match the file. ### What's the difference between this and Bates numbering? Plain page numbers restart at 1 for each document. Bates numbering assigns a unique, continuous identifier across a whole set of files, used mainly for legal and compliance records; see the guide linked above. ### Will this affect the existing content on the page? No. The number is added into the page without changing the existing text, images or layout underneath it. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/how-to-add-page-numbers-to-a-pdf --- # The best free PDF tools in 2026, and when a paid one is worth it > Dozens of sites promise free PDF tools. The real differences are where your file goes while it's processed, what the free tier actually allows, and what each one simply can't do. Searching for a free PDF tool turns up a long list of similar-looking sites. The meaningful differences between them aren't in the feature list, most cover the same basics: merge, split, compress, convert. They're in three questions worth asking before you upload anything. ## Where does the file actually go? Most "free online PDF tools" work by uploading your file to a server, processing it there, and giving you a link to download the result. That's a reasonable trade for convenience, but it means a copy of your document, which might be a contract, a medical record or a tax form, exists on someone else's infrastructure for at least a while. A smaller number of tools, including this one, process the file entirely in your browser instead: nothing is ever sent anywhere, which matters more for some documents than others. ## What the free tier actually allows "Free" rarely means unlimited. Common restrictions include a cap on tasks per hour or per day, a maximum file size or page count, and a time limit after which the result is deleted whether you've downloaded it or not. These limits are usually disclosed, but not usually on the page where you first land. We've checked and documented them directly for the tools people compare PDFJade against most often: - [iLovePDF](https://pdfjade.com/compare/ilovepdf-alternative), one of the most widely used, with daily task limits on its free tier. - [Smallpdf](https://pdfjade.com/compare/smallpdf-alternative), which limits free accounts to a small number of tasks per day. - [Sejda](https://pdfjade.com/compare/sejda-alternative), free for smaller files with a per-hour task limit, with a paid desktop version for heavier use. - [PDF24 Tools](https://pdfjade.com/compare/pdf24-alternative), free and unlimited online, with files deleted after an hour, plus a separate free desktop app for Windows. - [Adobe Acrobat online](https://pdfjade.com/compare/adobe-acrobat-online-alternative), which gives one free conversion before asking for a subscription. ## What none of them do well Every tool on this list, PDFJade included, shares the same real limitations. Converting a PDF to an editable Word or Excel file well enough to actually edit requires heavy software that a browser-based free tool doesn't run; results are usually rough. Rewriting the existing text of a PDF in place, rather than covering it or adding new text on top, needs the same kind of software. Collecting signatures from several other people, with a tracked audit trail, is a workflow feature that free single-user tools don't offer. For those three jobs specifically, a paid desktop app or a subscription service is still the right call, not a shortcoming to work around with a free tool. ## How to actually choose For a one-off job on an ordinary document, where the file is processed matters less and convenience wins; any of the tools above will do the job. For something sensitive, such as a legal, medical or financial document, a browser-based tool that never uploads the file is the meaningfully safer default. For heavy, repeated professional work, especially real text editing or accessibility tagging, a paid desktop license earns its cost. The comparisons linked above go into the specifics of each, checked and dated rather than taken from marketing pages. ## Questions ### Is a free PDF tool actually safe to use for sensitive documents? It depends on the tool. If it uploads your file to a server, that copy exists somewhere even if it's deleted afterward. A tool that processes files entirely in your browser never creates that copy in the first place, which is the safer choice for anything sensitive. ### Why do free PDF tools have daily limits? Server-based processing costs the provider money per file, so free tiers cap usage to limit that cost and encourage upgrades to a paid plan. Browser-based tools have no server cost per file, so they typically don't need this kind of limit. ### What's the catch with tools that are completely free and unlimited? Usually advertising, or the provider accepting the cost as a loss-leader for a paid product elsewhere in their lineup. It's worth checking a tool's privacy policy for what it does with usage data even when it doesn't charge. ### When should I just pay for Adobe Acrobat? When the job is genuinely editing existing PDF text, professional prepress work, accessibility tagging to a compliance standard, or collecting tracked signatures from multiple people. Those are the cases free tools, browser-based or server-based, consistently fall short on. Source: https://pdfjade.com/guides/best-free-pdf-tools --- # iLovePDF alternative: an honest comparison > iLovePDF does far more than we do. Here is where that matters, and where keeping your files on your own device is the better deal. Facts checked 22 October 2026 iLovePDF is one of the most used PDF sites in the world, and for good reason: it covers almost everything, including the conversions to and from Office formats that we don't offer at all. If that's what you need, use it. The difference that matters most is architectural. iLovePDF uploads your file, processes it on its servers and lets you download the result. PDFJade does the processing inside your browser, so the file never leaves your computer or phone. Both are reasonable designs with different trade-offs. ## The short answer ### Choose iLovePDF if - You need PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, or the reverse. - You want to send a document for others to sign. - You work with very large files on a slow computer: their servers do the heavy lifting. - You want a desktop app or a team account. ### Choose PDFJade if - The document is confidential: a contract, a payslip, a medical letter, an ID scan. Nothing leaves your device. - You hit the free per-tool caps, such as merging more than 25 files. - You'd rather not see ads or create an account. - Page-level jobs: merge, split, reorder, rotate, number, watermark, sign, compress, protect, OCR. ## Side by side | | iLovePDF | PDFJade | | --- | --- | --- | | Where files are processed | On iLovePDF's servers. Signed documents are the exception: they are kept for up to five years, which makes sense for a signature service that has to prove who signed what. For most documents that's a fair policy. For a few, any copy on someone else's server is one copy too many: an employment contract you haven't signed yet, a scan of a passport, a document under a confidentiality agreement. That's where a local tool earns its place. ## Free limits The free plan works per tool. On the day we checked, merging was capped at 25 files and 100 MB, compressing at 2 files and 200 MB, and Word to PDF at a single 15 MB file. Premium raises most limits to 4 GB and removes the ads. We don't set limits; the ceiling is your device's memory, and on a laptop that's rarely reached. ## What PDFJade doesn't do - Converting PDF to editable Word, Excel or PowerPoint, or Office files to PDF. ## Questions ### Is iLovePDF safe? It encrypts transfers and deletes processed files within two hours, according to its security page. The remaining question is whether a temporary copy on a server is acceptable for your document. ### Can PDFJade convert PDF to Word like iLovePDF? No. We don't offer Office conversions. For a Word file you can edit, iLovePDF or a desktop app is the better choice. ## Sources - [iLovePDF pricing](https://www.ilovepdf.com/pricing) - [iLovePDF security and data protection](https://www.ilovepdf.com/help/security) Source: https://pdfjade.com/compare/ilovepdf-alternative --- # Smallpdf alternative: an honest comparison > Smallpdf is a polished all-in-one service with an account, cloud storage and AI tools. It's a simpler promise, and easy to check: load a tool page, switch off your Wi-Fi, and run it. It still works. ## When the platform is worth paying for If you convert PDFs to Word every week, collect signatures from clients, or want every document you've processed in one searchable place, Smallpdf does things we simply don't. Use the right tool for the job; we'd rather you come back for the jobs we do well. ## What PDFJade doesn't do - Converting PDF to editable Word, Excel or PowerPoint, or Office files to PDF. ## Questions ### How many free tasks does Smallpdf allow? The pricing page mentions a daily download limit on the free plan without stating the number, and limits can change. Check it on their site. ### Does PDFJade have a daily limit? No. There's no account and no counter. Each tool runs on your device as often as you like. ## Sources - [Smallpdf pricing](https://smallpdf.com/pricing) - [Is Smallpdf safe? (Smallpdf, updated July 2026)](https://smallpdf.com/blog/is-smallpdf-safe) Source: https://pdfjade.com/compare/smallpdf-alternative --- # Sejda alternative: an honest comparison > Sejda's online editor is excellent, and its free tier is generous within an hourly limit. Here's how a no-upload toolkit compares. Facts checked 22 October 2026 Sejda is a favourite of people who need to fix a PDF rather than just rearrange it. Its online editor can change existing text, something most free tools, including ours, can't do. The free tier is generous in what it lets you do and strict in how often: on the day we checked, Sejda's compress page described it as "free service for documents up to 200 pages or 100 MB and 3 tasks per hour", and some tools apply tighter caps, such as one file per task. ## The short answer ### Choose Sejda if - You need to edit the existing text of a PDF. Sejda's editor does this well; we don't. - You need PDF to Word or Excel. - You want a paid desktop app with the same tools offline. ### Choose PDFJade if - You've used your 3 free tasks this hour and still have work to do. - Your file is over 200 pages or 100 MB. - You'd rather not upload the file at all, even for two hours. - You want everything free without a time-limited pass. ## Side by side | | Sejda | PDFJade | | --- | --- | --- | | Where files are processed | Online version: on Sejda's servers. Sejda Desktop: on your computer. | In your browser. The file is never uploaded. | | How long files are kept | Deleted automatically after 2 hours | Nothing is kept on a server, because nothing is sent to one. | | Free limits | Documents up to 200 pages or 100 MB, 3 tasks per hour; some tools are stricter (one file per task, 50 MB, 5 MB images) | No caps on files, pages or tasks. Your device's memory is the practical limit. | | Account | Not needed for the free tier | None | | Paid plan | Web Week Pass US$5 for 7 days; Desktop + Web US$63 a year | Free | | Ads | Not stated | None | | Office conversions | Yes, including PDF to Excel | Not offered (no PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, no Word to PDF) | | Offline option | Sejda Desktop, included in the annual plan | No app. Works in any current browser, on desktop and phone | ## What Sejda says about your files Uploaded files are "automatically deleted after 2 hours." If you'd rather not upload at all, Sejda offers Sejda Desktop, where, in its words, "the files never leave your computer". It comes with the annual plan. That's the same idea as PDFJade, delivered differently: Sejda as a paid desktop program, PDFJade as free web pages that run locally in the browser you already have. ## A practical split Many people will be best served by both. Use Sejda's editor when a typo in the original text has to go. Use local tools for the repetitive jobs, merging, splitting, numbering, compressing, so they don't eat into an hourly allowance. ## What PDFJade doesn't do - Converting PDF to editable Word, Excel or PowerPoint, or Office files to PDF. Doing that well needs heavy server software. - Editing the existing text of a PDF. You can add text, images and shapes on top in the Studio, not rewrite a paragraph in place. - Signature requests with an audit trail. Nothing is kept, so there is nothing to come back to. - Very large jobs on weak devices. A 500-page scan on an old phone will be slow, because your phone does the work. ## Questions ### Is Sejda free? Yes, within limits: 3 tasks per hour and documents up to 200 pages or 100 MB at the time we checked, with stricter limits on some tools. Paid passes remove them. ### Can PDFJade edit text in a PDF like Sejda? Not the existing text. The Studio lets you add text, shapes and images over a page, and white boxes can cover what's underneath, but that isn't real text editing. ## Sources - [Sejda pricing](https://www.sejda.com/upgrade) - [Sejda Compress PDF page (limits and deletion)](https://www.sejda.com/compress-pdf) Source: https://pdfjade.com/compare/sejda-alternative --- # PDF24 alternative: an honest comparison > PDF24 is free, unlimited and funded by ads, with a good offline app for Windows. We're the closest thing to that offline app for people on a Mac, Linux, Chromebook or phone. Facts checked 22 October 2026 PDF24 deserves credit. It's made by a German company, it's free without limits, it doesn't push a subscription, and its online servers are in the EU. If your question is "is there a free iLovePDF without caps", PDF24 is a fair answer. ## The short answer ### Choose PDF24 if - You're on Windows and want a free offline desktop app: PDF24 Creator is excellent. - You need Office conversions for free. - You need a tool we don't have; PDF24's catalogue is larger. ### Choose PDFJade if - You're on a Mac, Linux, a Chromebook or a phone and want processing to stay on your device. - You can't install software, for example on a work computer, but don't want to upload documents. - You'd rather not see ads. ## Side by side | | PDF24 | PDFJade | | --- | --- | --- | | Where files are processed | PDF24 Tools online: on PDF24's servers in the EU. PDF24 Creator (Windows): on your computer. | In your browser. The file is never uploaded. | | How long files are kept | Deleted automatically from the server after one hour | Nothing is kept on a server, because nothing is sent to one. | | Free limits | None stated: free and without restriction, including for companies | No caps on files, pages or tasks. Your device's memory is the practical limit. | | Account | Not needed | None | | Paid plan | None | Free | | Ads | Yes, the service is funded by advertising | None | | Office conversions | Yes | Not offered (no PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, no Word to PDF) | | Offline option | PDF24 Creator, free, Windows only | No app. Works in any current browser, on desktop and phone | ## Online vs offline PDF24 actually comes in two forms. PDF24 Tools, the website, uploads files over an encrypted connection and deletes them "automatically from the server after one hour". PDF24 Creator is a Windows program that, in PDF24's words, works offline and keeps "all files" on your computer. PDF24 itself says users of other systems should use the online tools. That's the gap PDFJade fills: the privacy of an offline app, with nothing to install, on whatever device you have. ## Who pays for it PDF24 is open about being funded by "discreet advertising". We don't show ads today. Both models are honest; they just feel different when you're in the middle of a task. ## What PDFJade doesn't do - Converting PDF to editable Word, Excel or PowerPoint, or Office files to PDF. A 500-page scan on an old phone will be slow, because your phone does the work. ## Questions ### Is PDF24 really free? Yes. Its FAQ says the online tools and PDF24 Creator are free without limits, financed by advertising. ### Is there a PDF24 Creator for Mac? PDF24's own FAQ points users of systems other than Windows to the online tools. If you want local processing on a Mac, browser-based tools like ours do the work on your device. ## Sources - [PDF24 Tools FAQ](https://tools.pdf24.org/en/faq) Source: https://pdfjade.com/compare/pdf24-alternative --- # Adobe Acrobat online alternative: an honest comparison > Acrobat is the reference for PDF, and the free online tools are a taste of it: one free task at a time. For everyday page jobs, you may not need the account. Facts checked 22 October 2026 Adobe invented PDF, and Acrobat Pro remains the most complete PDF software there is. The free online tools are a different product: a sample of Acrobat, limited by design so that regular users subscribe. ## The short answer ### Choose Acrobat online if - You need what only Acrobat does well: preflight, PDF/A validation, accessibility checks and tagging, redaction at scale. - Your company already has Acrobat licences. - You need signature workflows with legal audit trails at enterprise level. ### Choose PDFJade if - You need more than one task today without an account. - You want to protect a PDF with a password you can remove later yourself. Adobe's FAQ notes that a password added with the free tool can't be removed without a subscription. - You'd rather the file never goes to anyone's cloud. ## Side by side | | Adobe Acrobat online | PDFJade | | --- | --- | --- | | Where files are processed | Uploaded to Adobe cloud storage | In your browser. The file is never uploaded. | | How long files are kept | Without signing in, deleted from Adobe's servers shortly after (no period stated). Signed in: saved to your account. | Nothing is kept on a server, because nothing is sent to one. | | Free limits | Without an account, one free transaction on most tools. With a free account, premium tools allow one free transaction every 30 days. | No caps on files, pages or tasks. Your device's memory is the practical limit. | | Account | Adobe account for most repeated use | None | | Paid plan | Acrobat subscriptions, with a 7-day trial of Acrobat Pro | Free | | Ads | No ads, but prompts to subscribe | None | | Office conversions | Yes | Not offered (no PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, no Word to PDF) | | Offline option | Acrobat desktop apps | No app. Works in any current browser, on desktop and phone | ## How the free tier works According to Adobe's FAQ, without signing in "most tools let you complete one free transaction". Signed in with a free account, you can fill, sign, share and comment for free, and premium tools allow "one free transaction every 30 days on a rolling basis". One detail is easy to miss: Adobe notes that a password added with the free Protect PDF tool can't be removed later without an Acrobat subscription. Our [Protect PDF](https://pdfjade.com/protect-pdf) uses the same AES-256 standard, and [Unlock PDF](https://pdfjade.com/unlock-pdf) removes it again with the password, free. ## Where your files go Adobe states that its online services "upload your files to Adobe cloud storage". If you don't sign in, the file is deleted from its servers soon after; if you do, it's saved to your account and marked private. For company documents that may be exactly what you want. For a one-off personal file, local processing avoids the question. ## What PDFJade doesn't do - Converting PDF to editable Word, Excel or PowerPoint, or Office files to PDF. With a free account, filling, signing and commenting are free and premium tools allow one transaction every 30 days. ### Is PDFJade a replacement for Acrobat Pro? No. For professional prepress, accessibility tagging or editing text, Acrobat is in another league. PDFJade covers everyday page jobs, privately and for free. ## Sources - [Adobe: Try Acrobat online services, FAQ](https://helpx.adobe.com/document-cloud/faq/try-acrobat-online-services.html) Source: https://pdfjade.com/compare/adobe-acrobat-online-alternative --- # About PDFJade is a set of PDF tools that run entirely in your browser. You open a page, choose a file, and the result is built on your own device. That means no accounts, no watermarks, and no copy of your document sitting on someone else's server. It also means a few jobs are out of reach, such as turning a PDF into an editable Word file, and we say so rather than hide it. ## At a glance | | | | --- | --- | | Where files are processed | In your browser. Contact: hello@pdfjade.com Source: https://pdfjade.com/about --- # Open source PDFJade is going open source, under the MIT license. The code that merges, signs and compresses your files is the same code you'll be able to read, audit and run yourself. The core idea of PDFJade is that your files never leave your browser. Right now you have to take our word for that. An open repository means you, or anyone else, can check it directly in the source instead of trusting a privacy policy. License: MIT. ## What this will mean in practice - Anyone can read the code and confirm no file, image or scan is ever sent to a server. - You'll be able to host your own copy, on your own domain, for your own team. - Bug reports and pull requests are welcome: a fix or a new tool benefits everyone running the site. - The stack stays simple on purpose: plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, no build step, no framework to track, so it's easy to read start to finish. ## Status The site itself is live today and already runs entirely client-side. Publishing the source is the next step.
